I can't seem to get straight answer on this, and have searched multiple sources.
I have a 5 spd manual transmission. Toyota says you can't flat tow it. Other sources say you can without an issue, and some say you can with a drive train disconnect.

Does anyone know what doesn't get lubricated when towing the vehicle in neutral. I am not convinced a drive-train disconnect would even help, but if that would work I would at least do that. I would not use a dolly as there are other issues with that.

    Thanks in Advance

    Mike

I wish I could offer some definitive answer, but I share your confusion as why the hell you couldn't flat tow it.... I can't figure out what would potentially cause issues. Where'd you find the prohibition on flat towing? Dealer? Owners manual? Sub'd for an answer

Owner's Manual, plus I contacted Toyota directly, and a local repair shop that specializes in Toyota products.

Unless someone here offers some logical explanation I'd probably contact either your shop or Toyota again and get them to explain exactly what the risk is. I'm just curious at this point - not saying there isn't a logical answer, I just can't imagine what it is.

In N, the output shaft will be turning. However, the countershaft will not be turning and therefore will not be moving oil around in the transmission to lube the bushings/bearings.

I have a 2015 6 speed manual 4wd. I went through the same thing. Put the disconnect on the rear driveshaft. I jacked up the rear and turned the wheels, the driveshaft still spins when in neutral. To me that means parts are turning and probably not getting lubed. I have about 800 miles towing so far and no problems.
