What you described is pulling out the carrier, not the re-gearing part. He'll need something like a 20-ton press and some jaws to pull and install new bearings. Re-gearing is more complicated than just removing some bolts. Here's a video of installing gears on an axle with a cast centersection (salisbury) rather than the drop-out third member type (banjo) Toyota uses but the process is similar.

I guess it depends on what exactly he plans on doing I just straight swapped a guy 3rd member for 3rd member and was super easy but you are correct I know nothing about truly rear gearing

Swapping a third is cake, I want to learn to install and set the gears. I know the process but have never done it

Go to SD Truck shop and tell James you're from TW and ask him if he can show you the steps.

IMO there's some things just to leave to those who know. I've seen how to build a 3rd but have had 0 interest in doing it myself.

Thats not going to happen. Insurance doesn't cover non-employees in the working areas. People that say they want to change gears themselves probably got a 1k+ quote and don't want to pay it

So true, sadly changing gears is one of the things that you just need to take to the shop

Shout out to Jason Speed Freek for hooking up my 2014 Tacoma. He installed a full OME suspension lift and UCA's. The truck handles way better than the stock TRD suspension, it looks great too!
Jason works on the truck as if it were his own and has great attention to detail, will definitely bring some more work his way, thanks again Jason!

Go join an RoP auto class. You're going to have a difficult time finding a shop willing to let you watch or help without charging you for it. There is an old saying most shops know, $50 to do the job $100 if you help $150 if you tell me how to do it. A shop is trying to get the job done as fast as possible usually while still doing it right so they can move on to the next one and actually make a profit (in California this is hard enough) and from my experience the people asking to help or wanting to learn almost always makes the job take longer to complete. People will argue and say they're going to sit there like a church mouse and not say a word, but inevitably they will eventually ask a question that makes you have to stop and answer, 1 leads to another, and yet another. That costs extra time, time the employee could be spending on another job, and if they're not charging you for it, it's coming out of the owner's pocket. It comes down to this, if you're really not going to say a word or get in the way then the information you'd be getting is no better off than what you'll find on youtube. If you're still determined to find a mentor to teach you first hand your best bet is a small one man shop or craigslist.

Isn't that kinda the going rate? I'd really like to do it myself but if I F-it up it will definitely cost me more in the long run.

The rate is closer to $2k if you're 4x4.
