Question for the pros.. I have always used traditional wax. If I wanted to switch to using a sealant would all the old wax residue need to be removed for the sealant to work? I'm guessing so..

I'm not a pro, but yes- going by the book you should remove all old residue before applying a sealer. It ensures even application and maximum adhesion. From what I've read, claying pretty much takes care of this (I supplement with a wash with dawn dish soap- a controversial topic- but I think once a year is fine). There are pre-wax cleaners out there and I've heard good things about them. But I've also been warned that some of them can cause some major damage if not used correctly (temporarily softening the clear coat, leaving the surface vulnerable to finger marks).

In all honesty, it depends on how OCD you wanna be.

If your truck hasn't been waxed in awhile and you go ahead and apply a sealer without stripping first, you'll still very likely see an improvement. maybe even a considerable improvement. You might see some uneven tones due to where the sealer stuck best and where it didn't adhere as well (but you'd have to look real close). It certainly won't hurt anything. If anything, it will help as far as protection goes.

If you just waxed with a traditional wax a month ago, sealer results won't be as enhanced.

Keep in mind- pretty much all the over the counter waxes have a synthetic component to them now days. If you have the time/energy to strip before applying Ultimate Liquid or any other sealer, strip/clay it. If not, just give it a good wash and apply the sealer. My opinion is put SOMETHING on the paint. Any product is better than no product. But the proper prep is what Makes it look great or so-so in the end.

I use meguiars wash and wax soap. Then hand dry and use meguiars quick wax.

Maybe you saw the previous posts... a foam applicator pad is recommended if you have a black truck!

I never disliked the blues, but they never really jumped out at me. But I saw one on the road yesterday that must have just been waxed... Holy cow that thing was pretty. They've got a depth to the paint that none of the others have. Almost like a show car.

Good tip! Mine's white, but I'm going for the foam applicator anyway. Figure if it helps the black trucks it won't hurt my white one.

Remember to you only have to use like a cap full of the Meguire's "Wash And Wax"soap to get results. No need to use a lot.I use it on ocassion but i really like the Meguire's "Gold Class Car Wash"!I think that it truely does what is described by "cleaning And Conditioning"the surface wether or not you continue to do a full detail or express detail after or just a wash.

I use a good bit of the soap. It smells good, and so far it's made my truck look near perfect

OP(@harpolith)i did a thread in the past in the detailing section of TW.Thread is titled "Preference's For Detailing"I'm typically a Meguire's guy and always have been. Some of the products i use you may be interested in and once again great thread you got going on here with your knowledge and such!I've enjoyed posting on here as well!

I didn't realize you were the OP on that "preferences" thread! It's a good one. I've seen that one in the past but it's been awhile. I'll check it out again today. I appreciate the heads up. I seem to be "becoming" a Meguires guy. I've been more than satisfied with everything I've tried. The only one of the bunch that I seem to have dropped is the Ultimate Spray Wax, in favor of the TW Ice. I don't doubt the protection is there in the Meg's but the shine in the Ice has me hooked. I'll have to try the Meg's again one of these days.

I also tried Meg's Gold Class soap last week. Didn't realize a soap could make a difference in the end when doing a detail, but I honestly think the truck looked better after that wash than any previous wash. The surface had a totally different feel to it when I was done- Kinda like when you oil a piece of old wooden furniture. It just felt "conditioned".

Thanks to you and the rest that contributed to this thread. Always fun when folks jump on board and contribute. I'm no detailing pro by any means (and I always hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong about anything). I've picked up a majority of my knowledge here on TW, as well as on the Meg's Online Forum (MOL). A really helpful and knowledgeable bunch over there. If I have experience with any products, I'm always happy to offer advice or at least share about my experience. So, ask questions if you got em :)

Edit: I used the Ice Spray wax on the entire truck today after a wash/dry. Windows included. Worked great.

Just something to note (and maybe you know this already), be sure to dust off the surface before applying the second coat the next day. You can also just wait a few days, wash the truck, and then apply the second coat. I've done it that way if my truck ends up too dusty after the first 24 hours. You're not gonna lose much product that first week anyway.

And for those that might not know- After you have those first two coats applied, you can reapply whenever you want. Just wash as you normally would and apply. Sometimes it'll suck it up and sometimes you won't notice much difference. Just depends on how many wash cycles/how much weathering it has seen.

@harpolith Just picked up a bottle of the Ice Spray Wax today.

Going to use this combo tomorrow:

    1) Car Wash: http://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-G7164-Class-Shampoo-Conditioner/dp/B0009IQXFO

    2) One coat of the Ice Liquid Car Wax: http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Wax-T-468R-ICE-Liquid/dp/B007KTINZI

    3) Finish with 1 coat of the Ice Spray Wax: http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Wax-T-477R-ICE-Spray/dp/B007KTINWQ

I'll let you know how it turns out. I used the Ice Liquid Wax about a month ago for the 2015's first bath and was every impressed by the results. Now about 4 weeks later the Tacoma has a pretty decent amount of road grime and fine dust on it. I'm really excited to see the end results of these products.

Awesome. Yeah, come back and let us know how it turns out! I might recommend waiting 12-24 hours after the Liquid Wax application before using the spray. It sounds like there is a synthetic component (~polymer sealer~) to that product, and if it's anything like the other synthetic "waxes" out there, there is a cure time. Best to give the product some time to allow cross linking of the polymers to occur and bind to the paint. Otherwise you'll likely be wiping off some of what you just laid down. Hope that makes sense. This new polymer technology is a little different that what most people are used to. The vehicles often look better after 24 hours than they did right after you applied the product.

This shouldn't be so complicated that it becomes no fun- hope I'm not turning it into that. Just sharing some of what I've learned. This should be nothing but fun! Ha and if you don't wanna wait 24 hours, then put that sh!t on now! It'll be fine. I always hate waiting when I've got the product in my hand!

Just curious- do they mention a cure time on the bottle?
