For years and years we had a Jeep which used mostly USS & SAE fasteners. As with many folks, we carried a coffee can of miscellaneous sizes of nuts, bolts, screws, and so forth. It seemed easy at the time- 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" of various lengths plus a few really long, and strong bolts.

Now with the Tacoma I'm carrying the same coffee can, stuffed with the same (probably useless) bolts and so forth.

Some of the fasteners on the fender wells, door jambs, have fallen out, and I've got empty holes waiting for the remainder of the screws to vibrate out.

So I went to a metric fastener page to try to understand the breakdown of various types of metric fasteners and am now much more confused.

My question - Now that I've dumped out my coffee can, it sits empty on the workbench - are there some common sizes/thread pitch/ I should buy? Some bolt companies offer an "assortment pack" but I haven't a clue if they contain anything pertinent to a Tacoma?

    Thoughts?

This is what I typically see - this from Ebay for $52.00 - no clue what quality I'd get:

This is a 620 piece class 8.8 zinc plated steel hex cap screw, hex nut, flat and lock washer assortment. It comes in a steel box that is clearly labled and has a removeable plastic tray, hinged lid and latch. It includes the following sizes: M5x16, M5x20, M5x30, M6x16,M6 x20,M6 x30, M8x16,M8 x25,M8 x40, M10x20, M10x35,M10 x40 (occasionally reasonable substitutes may be used to ensure timely delivery) and corresponding nuts and washers. These sizes are all commonly found in the automotive, industrial, power equipment and many other fields. part# HC620

Ya. It rusts apart. Then give it time.
