I've got an 03 PreRunner 3.4L with a bit over 184000 on it. I'm looking to drain ATF but was looking for what brand is a good replacement. I know Toyota would prefer I buy genuine T-IV from them but what other companies make a similar product? Also, I bought the truck at 100k's on it and I don't know what kind of previous life and maintenance it had, would it be wise to drop the pan and replace with filter too? I don't do any towing and rarely have had a heavy load but I used to live in the boondocks and dirt roads were a frequent part of my commute. Now my commute is primary 60 mi round trip of interstate and highway (would rather have the dirt roads again). Thanks

I went through this dilemma a few months ago from the lack of information on here. I put together the best info i could find in an old thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/dex-iii-or-t-iv-transmission-fluid-for-a-2000-2-7l.378312/

The best direct replacement fluid would be the Toyota T-IV. The older trucks call for a Dexron II, the newer call for T-IV/Dex III. T-IV is just a Toyota spec Dexron III with included friction modifiers. Many have reported that this is just a rebranded Mobil 3309 fluid, which is the spec for all A340 transmissions from Avalons to Supras.

Some also use full synthetic fluids such as Mobil 1 or Redline, cant really say if these make any difference in performance.
