One of my two timing chain cover studs won't go back in because the threads in the block are either stripped or the gasket maker got in the hole and prevents gripping (unlikely but i guess possible). As a result, I can't torque the nut on the other end because any attempt causes the stud/bolt to break out of the little grip it has on the other side. It spins in place no matter how much I tighten. The other stud/bolt works fine.

All the other timing chain cover bolts went in fine and I torqued them to 17 ft/lbs. What are my options here ? Is there any hope that some thread sealant would ensure a better grip ? I am hoping not to have to use Helicoil. I tried running a tap in it but to no avail.

The arrow in the picture below shows the stud/bolt in question. The picture is old, I have the cover on now. I didn't take them off when I was dismounting the cover but then someone told me I should before putting it back on because it will be easier.

I solved a similar problem by tapping hole to next largest bolt size. However, I don't see that you have much material there and you'll have to drill out the cover also. I'm inclined to suggest the Helicoil. If it were not a critical location like this, I might even suggest using red thread locker, but I would do it right for this component.

How long did you wait to install the stud, after installing the timing cover?

Either way you are going to have to remove the timing cover to do it correctly. If it were me I wouldn't bother with the quickie fixes as the Magic Locktite Thread Maker .... Half Assed Fix if it even works.

Do it properly : Remove the timing cover and install a Thread Insert or a Helicoil.
After all the time you have in this engine why half ass it when you are so close?

Oh and learn how to not strip bolts/nuts/studs.

    :)

So the stud won't go in, it only catches a couple threads and pulls itself back out?

sort of. it feels like it's going in but towards the end, it just starts an infinite spin never increasing the torque. if i try to tighten the nut over it, it actually starts reversing the stud

One more question: out of a total of 19 fasteners on this cover, only 2 are studs with a nut. What is it that they do that a plain bolt like the rest of the 17 can't do ?

Yet another question: considering that this is just one of the 19 fasteners of the cover, and that excludes the ones from the water pump, how much leak could I expect if I just left it off ?

Try to install a slightly longer stud if possible. You may catch a few good threads if it doesn't bottom out. See if one of the bolts will catch in there.

Just fix it right. No one can answer your hypothetical what if's

A helicoil is the correct way to fix this. It is easy to install.

Or use a bolt. And try applying slight pressure while threading it. It sounds like some fipg is blocking the path.

Yeah but then you have to ask yourself how many of the threads are actually holding or are engaged?

    Questionable at best.

FIPG isn't going to stop a bolt. It is stripped threads in the block.

You're left with seeing if it works without it, or pulling it apart and fixing it with a heli-coil.

It will if air is trapped inside the threads.
