What is the purpose of a very small keeper ring on top of a fuel injector? Does it work in conjunction with the O ring that goes over it before it goes into the rail? I am missing it on one of my 6 injectors and was wondering how critical a feature it is and whether I should replace it. Here is what an injector looks like with and without it (gasket not shown):

Here is what a proper injector looks like with a keeper AND an O ring:

Didn't you hear that there is a 1 question a day limit? Sometimes I wonder if your the troll... :D

Taking parts off your truck, altering them, and then presenting it to the forum asking if they will still work. :stirthepot:

I didn't alter it, I lost the ring on one and trying to decide if it means I need to replace the whole injector.

 This shit just gets better and better.

How many times are you gonna ask if something that the Toyota engineers designed for an engine reallllly needs to be there before you learn that they probably know a bit more than you do?

that is not an explanation for what the purpose of the thing is. i am sure that it has a purpose and i am asking what it is

    It's there for a reason.

I hope to god you aren't working on other peoples vehicles.

that is still not a valid explanation of what it does.

Put everything back together without it and fire the truck up. I'm sure you'll figure out what it's there for.

i wonder why there is such pervasive hatred on this forum for anyone who asks questions of type "why is this designed the way it is?" or "what does this actually do?" vs most people just taking the factory spec and adhering to it like a word of god. i am not saying engineers are wrong -- i just want to understand why they are right.

Because your questions have been trying to figure out a short cut or a way to cut a corner.. which is retarded when fixing a multi thousand dollar part of a vehicle.

To answer your question, its an o-ring... they usually have one job. To create a seal.

If you read the question carefully, you will see that the object it refers to is not the O-ring, it is above the O-ring. Look in the pictures. The 2nd picture shows it together with the O ring.

The O ring is rubber, this thing is firm plastic (or metal, couldn't tell)

I'm going to guess, but I'd say it's a 2 part sealing setup. You could look inside the fuel rail and see if there is some sort of step that both would make contact with. Another theory would be a keeper to prevent the injector from moving when at operating fuel pressure.

Maybe that top one is the main seal to handle the pressure and the lower o-ring is to keep it centered in the rail?

Who knows, but it should probably be on there. Leaking fuel is a scary thing.

I was thinking something along similar lines but I couldn't tell if the keeper was used as a gasket or for something else and whether its absence means increased risk of leaking fuel.

So your real question is "can I put this injector back with this missing part and be okay?"

Every time I log onto this forum I see mickey mouse questions being asked by this guy. Not sure if troll, or nah...

Dude If you have this many questions about parts and their reassembly or disassembly, then you should probably not be working on it and take it to a mechanic or a guy who knows what they are doing.

oh and get this. that little o-ring ? has to have all sorts of federal and european certification applied
to it () and has to be made a special way. that fatter o-ring ? none of that shit, it's just a rubber o-ring.

but --you-- know better than that doncha ? throw those all out and get some from ACE hardware, they'll have one that fits. You know best.

I'd think his rebuild is almost done, so whatever, I'm curious to see the outcome.

I'd ask a lot of dumb questions also, I'm sure.. but I'd still ask them if need be. I wouldn't necessarily ask this question, but who am I to judge..
