I'm out here at the truck right now. Double checked vac lines. All are seated properly. No leaks. Idles just fine. However, and I don't know if this is normal, but when I go to press down on the brake pedal while the engine is running, I can hear a lot of air being released from the boot attached to the pedal, in the cabin.

Your brake booster is probably bad. That's what helps you push the pedal down. A hard pedal when the engine is running means the booster is not assisting you. That hissing air is vacuum leaking somewhere inside of it.

Brake booster, brake booster, brake booster (like the other 2 peeps said)! Unless your master cylinder rusted and has nearly seized, making it hard to depress the pedal, your brake booster has gone bad. Your diaphragm in the booster body has a reasonably big tear that opens immediately after pressing, allowing air from the cab to pass in, leaving the vacuum caused by the engine utterly useless. The only other possibilities are the hose and check valve. But neither make a hissing sound when you press the brakes.

It's the brake booster. Also, try not to run the truck so much (for more than 2 weeks or so). The vacuum leak in this situation will mess with your long term fuel trim.

It is not the master cylinder.it is the "power booster" that has blown out.though not recommended.... You can drive a short distance....and for the dicks being ass hats.....y'all don't know this dudes situation.... Maybe he had no other choice but to drive it home...I've been there.
