I do, but it's not 20 years old now and it certainly wasn't even close to that when it was imported 8 years ago

Aaaand I bought a 2000 Suzuki bike from the states. It has km on the inside of the dial, but ODO was in miles. Passed no problem. This was about 6 years ago

Yet on this RIV website it says a metric speedo and odometer labeling MAY be necessary:

    https://www.riv.ca/VehicleModifications.aspx

Here's the specific list for a passenger car:

    • Recall clearance letter
    • The vehicle must bear a manufacturer's valid U.S. Statement of Compliance (SOC) label at the time of import/inspection.
    • Valid alpha-numeric 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
    • Metric speedometer
    • Odometer labels
    • Daytime running lights
    • Child restraint tether anchorage hardware kit
    • Child restraint tether anchorage point locations (see Transport Canada’s List of Vehicles Admissible from the United States)
    • French supplementary restraint system label for airbags that require periodic maintenance
    • Air bag equipped vehicles are required to have functioning air bags at the time of inspection.
    • If the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle is less than 10,000 lbs., and the manufacture date is after September 1, 2007, it must be equipped with an electronic immobilizer system that meets Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 114.
So I'm thinking what is happening is that dealerships, which can be licensed to do there own inspections, and some places aren't really being fussy about the provincial inspection. Whose to say they didn't assume the odometer was in km's... By the letter of the law there should be some modification made to the odometer at the very least.

    It's all good to know.

I assume by odometer label it means a label that specifies that the odometer is in miles somewhere on the panel. I can't think of any other reason to label the odometer off the top of my head.

I Did some googling. Apparently some bmw and Mercedes models don't comply with Canadian rules (or some other gov bs) and my need their clusters altered or changed to allow for drl use.
One guy said bmw wanted $3000 to swap clusters so he took it to another shop that simply wired the drls directly without going through the cluster. Apparently it's common with bmws, all the Audi fanboys respond with "buy and Audi"

Under normal circumstances the cluster doesn't need to be changed out.

Yeah, the only people I know who have brought vehicles back up from the states have brought up BMW's or Mercedes from Arizona. That makes sense. Oh, and I guess one guy brings back the odd $70,000 car from Barrett but those cars are over the 15 year exemptions. I hope you didn't think I was going after you there.

I was just confused as to whether the people I know have been getting ripped off or legitimately had to get the cluster changed. I know they didn't pay $3000 for parts though. In the end the one guy had a fairly new M3 for under $20K.

I want a Honda S2000 one of these days. When and if the dollar reaches par again I might pull the trigger on one from Arizona or California (cheapest places to fly to from my location) and drive it back myself .

I typed "importing to canada change cluster" into google and hundred of complaint sites came up about bmws and mercedes. People even claiming BMW and Mercedes have conspired with the Canadian government to force in-country sales haha.

The reality is I have a 2011 US truck, the only requirement was daytime running lights.

Importation is a breeze, not worth the fees for a private company to do it. As previously said, with the exchange the way it is I wouldn't bother right now unless it is a steal.

The other main point is you can bring a new truck across, you just can't get a dealership nearby to sell you it. Essentially you must get a temporary address, ie shipping address in the states. You will pay state tax on the truck since it is a local sale. Then the truck should be stored for 3 days within the state after purchase. After that point you can import it. Toyota will honor the warranty (as per my conversation with corporate) but recalls may require you to take a trip across the border.....

Toyota honours my recalls. They just have to log into the American computer system to verify your vin. That being said it has to be a recall in both countries.

Toyota dealers must honor recalls issued for Canadian vehicles. If the recall is specific to US vehicles it might be a grey area since Canadian dealers aren't going to get compensated for it and are not, in a straight forward sense from transport canada, legally required to fix it....

As for the rest of the warranty as far as I've been told they must honor it. When the dollar first hit par a bunch of dealers stopped honoring warranty on US sourced vehicles as a form of resistance but they were quickly over ruled by corporate.

They will not honor warranty - Many manufacturers refer to these as gray market vehicles and therefore warranty is void....unless you can keep the vehicle registered in the other country for a set period of time then a change of address allows you to carry the warranty.

Spoke to the dealership here in Ontario Canada and they haven't a clue what's going on with the 2016 models. They cannot order and see anything in the system to review configurations - sad.
