Original Toyota air filter crap

After 3years of running an aftermarket reusable air filter, I found a good deal on Craigslist
for a box of Toyota 17801-OPO10 air filters. The price was tempting just under $8.00 a pop and I pull the trigger. Now 2 months later I feel sorry because the gas/mileage dropped from 17.7-8
to only 16.6-7 around town/highway driving. Any thoughts?

 

Highly unlikey. Dirty filter, clean filter, no filter, no chance you mileage dropped that much.

That's a good deal for the filters. The seller still have some?

 

Another likely potential factor in this issue is that your aftermarket filter increased airflow above stock at the expense of protection from particulates. The OEM filter is designed to protect the engine too. There are several interesting threads and studies on this and the tradeoffs, here and on Bob is the Oil Guy. Go take a look.

And check your tire pressure or other standard potential variables affecting mileage.

I do maintain my truck very carefully, I think, and nothing has changed. It is true that I am not using it as much as I tend to use my other car lately.
I wander if I should disconnect the battery and let the computer reseat itself?
Just thinking.

 

Put the reusable back in , run it for two months, if mileage improves well then you have your answer.

 

Now now, don't overcomplicate things.

clean the MAF right now, go get a can of schpritzel, blast it, then see what happens.

could have a chunk of mung on
it and it'll mess up any air metering

Too logical - reusable filters might increase mileage - heresy! - LOL If you do put it back in, and your mileage goes back up, just keep it to your self.
