Bummer, but good luck! Not terribly difficult, just time consuming. Don't follow any of foampile's blunders.

Just got to the timing cover. This project can be done without taking the engine out right? I saw that mechanics say it has to come out but some people said they didn't need to.

Does not need to come out. If you don't have them, get the FSM and a Haynes, all I used when I did mine.

Once the timing cover is off, most all of the work is off the top, and by then you have already done pretty much everything that pulling the motor would have made easier.

Is there a timing cover gasket or so you just use a sealer?

I used the Toyota black FIPG, no solid gasket exists that I am aware of.

While your at it replace water pump, timing chain, crankshaft seal, cam shafts seal , and oil pump. Hey once you got her open might as well replace as many tins as possible. The next thing to go (if it hasn't already) is the fuel pump. The suspension on these puppies is unbelievably tough. Depends on how you ride them. If you decide to replace the tins ,ask father in law for All Data procedures to do the job. Glad to see you found the problem. Your doing the labor otherwise this one is $$$$$.

Well I was going to ask if you had checked for vacuum leaks, but onto the head gasket removal. Lol.

There is a coolant passage which attaches both of the heads together, near the firewall. Each head has three bolts/nuts holding it on. Carefully remove that.

Um, no. Water pump and seals, the rest is unnecessary unless there are specific issues with those parts. Mine, and all others I have encountered that have gotten this far into the motor, have no issues with the chain or oil pump. All of the seals that are encountered should be replaced, and are part of the service kit that contains the HG itself. Fuel pump is completely unrelated to this project.

Ill add my experience here from my 2005. had a SUPER small head gasket leak, only way to know was a coolant pressure test for about 6 hours, and i was able to see coolant in the cylinder.

I did the head gaskets with help of my knowledgable friend in my garage. One mistake we made, was not realizing that the timing chain cover leaks on these trucks, it's a known issue. so now, a year later, my timing cover is leaking and you should definitely be aware of that when you put it back together. Maybe use extra silicon on the cover or something to try to prevent that from happening.

    Good luck!

The mating surfaces in the area behind the power steering pump is the most prone to leaking. Add a little extra silicone to that location.

If yours is leaking, then use the Permatex 1 minute gasket maker. Clean and apply externally, and it will seal the leak.

whoah thanks guys! Yeah i put 15lbs pressure in the radiator then saw a little coolant in the cyl 6. Thats how i knew. I started taking the heads off tonight but i need a 10mm 12pt for the headbolts. Whats the easiest way to find all these darned o-rings and gaskets!? I got a headgasket set victor reinz, but heres a little list of what i need to get still

    Timing cover o-rings - Theres 5 I think
    Crank Pully bolt
water outlet hoses (front) (Theres several of them)
    injector to manifold o-rings

Im replacing the idle pulleys, water pump, all gaskets and o-rings i come across, had the alternator serviced.
Checked the chain over and guides, they look really good so i'll leave them alone.

anyway.. Ideas for best place to find the exact o-rings and such?

Nice cross hatch there! How do the thrust surfaces look?

Now get a catch can to keep your pistons looking good too. ;)

Not to thread jack, but have you done this and confirmed that it is a long lasting fix? This is exactly what i am going to try, but was thinking it might not work....

My dad was a mechanic and owned a Part store years ago, he swears by Permitex's The Right Stuff.
I figure if the surface was cleaned well and theirs not too much pressure where the leak is it would seal it.
