I'm thinking about picking up a bakflip cover, but I have read complaints that the tonneau cover must be up in order for the tailgate to be closed, which would require 2 hands. 1 to lift up the cover and 1 to close the tail gate.

Do any owners consider this a real world issue?

    Has anyone ever modified theirs?

Bakflip owner here. When you have two hands available, use two hands. When you don't, you develop a special maneuver known only to Bakflip owners. It involves grabbing the latch cable of the cover and lifting it slightly, then using your hip to partially lift the tailgate until you can reach it with your elbow, then using your elbow to close the gate all the way and then drop the lid.

It sounds inconvenient and obviously it would be a easier if you could just use one hand but it's a very small price to pay for the sturdy, good-looking, functional tonneau cover that it is.

I've heard that too, but I have the Roll-X and I actually need to have the tailgate open in order to close the cover or else the latches don't catch. It's as if the the tailgate, if closed, doesn't allow the cover to move far enough down to catch the latches.

In any case, as the above post states, you learn how to manipulate it in different circumstances and I've never found it to be an inconvenience for the security and functionality it's given me. One of the best purchases I've made for my Tacoma!

BTW, I understand they may have updated or refined the Roll-X cover since I bought mine a couple years back.

Blah Blah Blah. Like your FF team, nobody cares!
I have the backflip and replaced the rear seal with a standard D shaped piece of weather stripping on the underside of the cover where it rest on the tailgate. The round shape of the seal allows it to compress as much as it needs to make the seal without holding the edge of the cover up. The round shape also allows the tailgate to be closed into an already shut cover with no issues. Its been on for about 2 years and never leaks water or snow. Only exception is a little wetness on just the inside of tailgate along the sides when I take it through the occasional drive through car wash but not enough to be of any concern. That's how I got my one hand operation with either method of closing the cover or tailgate last.

I normally lower the cover so it doesn't latch and the shut the tailgate, then push the cover down to latch. But you you are correct that the cover must be opened to close the tailgate. No big issue once you get used to it. Other covers have their pros /cons. I like the choice I made.

Have had my backflip for a few years now and have never had any problems with the seal. I can close the tailgate most times without lifting the back panel. I am cautious with the rear seal when doing so, and seeing that you are in a dry climate like me, I don't see it being an issue.

I have scrapped my arm a couple times holding stuff and trying to close the tailgate with my knee and elbow but it worked. I like it. I really like that I can close the tailgate, and the tonneau closes over it and I can lock my tailgate and no one is getting in there.
