They still insist it's a rattling heat shield on the cat. I guess I will have a muffler shop look at it. They say everything else motor related is solid. Wish someone who has heard the noise would chime in with experiences

Here is a better video. The noise can't be heard from the passenger floorboard, because I set the phone there and recorded and couldn't hear anything. But under the driver side floorboard its very easy to hear.

If it was a GM truck i would say the rotating assembly, like a bad rod bearing. Though i expect you take good care of your truck and Toyota engines rarely experience these things. It sounds constant, doesn't seem it changes much with acceleration. You mentioned the cat rattling. Do you have any custom work on the exhaust or shielding?

No custom work. Someone told me it could be engine knock. I am gonna put some 93 to see if it stops

hmmm i can't hear anything. or the only thing i think i can hear sounds like sticky valves. give it a good flush before an oil change. and use some lubri moly engine additive from napa after your next oil change.

I don't know how you can't hear it lol it's glaringly obvious when I listen to it. Is your video quality high enough?

yeah 1080HD. but I do have a 500watt home theater receiver pushing 2 pioneer stacks and 2 bose cabinet speakers. lot's of base and probably not enough treble. The volume is also so high, some of the other furniture is vibrating in my room. still can't hear anything out of the ordinary :\

hah. just put on my headphones and heard it between the 14 and 20 second marks.

something is rattling, you guys are right. all I can say is get under there and start playing with everything that is bolted to something. then again, the OP didn't say he tightened down the bolts to his cat cover. he just placed some tape or something in between, that won't fix the problem. get a and glide around from exhaust tip to motor and see what all might be loose.

I've been hearing it for about a year. But of course I rarely drive around with music off. I usually do once a year to listen for weird noises. This one is still there.
I put tape in between because the tech showed me marks on the cat where it was banging up against the bellypan skid plate. I will have to check all the bolts and stuff tomorrow since I'm off.
Interesting... Wonder what this infamous rattle is!

A member on TTORA said it could be a loose o2 sensor or the cat heat shield. So I guess I need to start wiggling stuff around to find out what's loose down there

I'm also gonna put some premium gas in there to see if maybe it IS a pinging issue.

I feel you'd be able to make out a heat shield, it'd be an obvious exterior sound, something tinny and rattly versus something that sounded like it was coming from inside something or was a moving part.

That's my biggest question, does it sound internal versus external, does it sound most obvious like you mentioned from under the drivers side floorboard?

It'd be the most help to those of us with poor hearing (20 years of construction and shooting guns and loud music) if you could pinpoint a general area if possible.

An exterior part should more obvious to identify, I'm wondering if you can rule out external components like an alternator, power steering pump or ac compressor simply by the sound not being obvious from them.

I'm gonna suggest you climb under your truck with the front skid off, take a long screwdriver, hold the handle to your ear and the tip against things like the oil pan, the bell housing, the ac compressor, near the crank pulley. I'd especially try to find your clutch fork and listen around there, I find it strange it's coming from under your feet in the one video.

Repeat the process topside CAREFULLY because of the spinning fan, and put your ear to the fan pulley bracket where maybe you can hear if it's a pulley on the timing belt or the water pump, and if possible the alternator and power steering pump.

I encourage you to not throw away your money taking it to a dealer to find it, they'll either find nothing or worse they'll create something and suggest you just start throwing parts at it. Not to be rude, but if you have time and money to take it to a dealer, I think you should have time to pull your skid and buy a long screwdriver and "stethascope" to pinpoint the noise, cost you $10 and take you less than an hour.

Here's what I see as a worst case. Oil pump, bearing or some internal engine part, which means ride it til it dies and do nothing, may just keep going with the noise and never be an issue.

Second worse case is maybe something in the bellhousing like a throw out bearing or a pressure plate or clutch plate going. You said you submerged the truck around 50,000 miles ago, correct? If the case is you'd need a new clutch it's not the end of the truck at least, just $$

Lastly, maybe it's a timing belt pulley, water pump since you should be changing those around 100'000 miles anyway or something on a belt like a fan pulley bracket bearing or an alternator, etc.

Good luck man, I'd be aggravated too.

The only problem with climbing under the truck and checking is the noise only occurs when the truck is under load acceleration, such as going up a hill.

The clutch, throw out bearing, and flywheel were all installed roughly 30k miles ago or less, and the rear main seal was replaced in the process.

The rear main began leaking after I submerged the truck in muddy water up the the rocker panels. This was when I was a stupid high school kid. The truck was making all sorts of god awful noises due to dry bearings and pulleys. The timing belt was done early because of this, at 67k miles. I'm currently at 156k, so another timing belt and water pump job is coming up. I'm guessing that the noise is related to that, but I'm still not entirely sure and it's impossible to check for the noise while the truck is at idle.

I am running a tank of 93 octane now, just to see if I can rule out any pinging issues.

The noise appears to have subsided, leading me to believe that it is in fact a pinging issue.

Summer's back and the noise is back with a vengeance. I guess I'll try unbolting the heat shield from the cat just to see if that's the problem.
