You realize, I am the one who started this topic 7 pages ago? I'll just hook my car to the back and see how it tows. Getting towing opinions here is a crap shoot

You got a point. I just figured someone has maybe towed something by now. 99.99% of these threads are filler with nothing to do with original topic.

I probably tow a max of 10x per year. I have a 3k lb trailer that you see in my profile image. I'd rather have a nimble daily driver and go a tad slow 10x a year than have a behemoth truck that sucks gas and tows great for those 10x per year I do tow. I get that towing 6800 lbs with a Tacoma is a bad idea, but I do think hauling half the capacity should be doable and more powerful than my current gen 2. Am I crazy for thinking this?

    Conclusions came to:

Tow a couple times a year and a Nissan Leaf would suffice.

Tow more than that then you better look into a Freightliner and get a CDL.

I would say wait till there are more trucks in more hands. Until we hit a tipping point of actual driver experience we stuck with anecdotal evidence on how this truck will perform. Also confirming OP's stance that clearly medium duty is for towing whilst light duty is for grocery getting.

I don't think towing a 3k lb trailer should be too taxing on a mid size truck.

I knew those VW diesels seemed too good to be true. Cheap, amazing MPG etc.

I am responding to the over zealous nature of the board about anything being towed with this truck. This is the problem with personal experience is we do not know the full story. Maybe those who had issues towing had something wrong with the truck, conversely the good experiences may have had other factors that played into that. MFG's put ratings on generally to say what a vehicle is capable of in reasonable circumstances. There should be some safety margin built in for those who are negligent. 1 1/2 tons should be fine for this truck.

    Agreed.

I had a 2003 F-250 FX4 Crew Cab Long Bed with the 7.3L International Diesel Motor as a work Truck for years. Towed 20,000lbs behind it on the regular (New Holland LB90 Backhoe 15,000lbs and lowboy trailer was another 5,000lbs) and it did fine, truck was rated for 20,000lb max. But, it was in Delaware where the state is as flat as Florida, and I took my time and was smart about it. Wasn't trying to win land speed records with it or stopping contest and stayed aware of the idiots around me. Trailer obviously had brakes and it used a pintle hook style connection. Did it work the truck, yes. But it was my work horse and never let me down.

The biggest thing I see with people complaining about towing is they dont have it set up right. How many travel trailers do you see going down the road where the rear tires of the trailer are almost off the ground because the tounge of the trailer is almost dragging the ground.

My guess is that owners are just now in a position to hook up something and get out of town for the weekend. Patience.

I fully expect the gen 3 to tow as good or better than my gen 2. The six speed may hunt more, but it should be fine at cruise on the flat roads here in Texas.

Here's my Taco and what I tow. No problems with this load.

I don't think many people have towed with the 3rd gen yet. If they are following the proper break in schedule. Which I believe is no towing for the first 1000 miles.
