I don't understand ordering a 2016

If I walk into a dealer and tell them I want a DCSB OR V6 M/T 4x4 in Quicksand with a towpackage, d-rings, all wheather mats, and no other options, period. What happens next?

Do they just try and find that truck on some other lot or some other dealers allocation list and secure it for me? Or can they truly order it from Toyota that way?

After reading every post on this site I am confused. It seems like some claim it can be ordered and some seem like they are just stealing an allocation from another dealer. Please help me understand.

Typically when you "order" a truck, you actually sit down with the dealer and spec out everything and they build that sumbitch just for you.

And will Toyota take an order in the way you describe? The configuration I want is going to be hard to find without some tech package of some sort.

No, you will wait until Toyota makes one like that

Unless you work for Toyota, you ain't going to be ordering anything. You just wait until something close shows up in the region's allocation and your dealer tries to secure it. Then maybe you can make small changes to the options before its built.

OK. That is what I thought. I have just seen so many posts from guys talking about "ordering" and then posting "my truck is being built this week" that I got confused. Thanks.

No custom ordering with Toyota. Except as mentioned above about working for them.

Basically if the exact truck you want was going to eventually be made that's your "order" and it should get allocated to you. If the specific model/options were never going to be made you're out of luck.

For instance, I "ordered" my truck over 4 weeks ago but I still don't have a build date. My model/options will eventually be made but I have to wait until they get around to it. Supposedly it's one of the more rare builds.

I hear off roads are hard to come by and there may or may not be production delays for the double cab long beds. I'm in the northeast too so ANY 2016's at all are rare to see.

I tried to "order" one yesterday. Salesman said it's quicker to modify an allocation, but he could build one from scratch, but it would just take awhile to receive it.

Well...subscribed... because I went to the dealer today to do just that, and they said that they could not order a truck...

I was told that they would have to find something similar to what I wanted (exact match or close) and exchange allocations or other incoming vehicles to get it... at that point I really stopped listening and everything else sounded like the adults in a Charlie Brown cartoon.

    charliebrown_zpsgioggfde_add813b1630be0098601de92b7aa7796a40a3177.jpg

I gave them the list of what I wanted (btw, this is not a weird configuration that is not possible... I picked the packages right out of the pdf that was shared here):

Tacoma TRD Off-Road, 4x4, Double Cab, Short Bed in Magnetic Gray Metallic
    Premium & Technology Package
    Tow Package
    Front and Rear Mudguards
    All-weather mats

Then he tells me that ths is an unsual combination since someone that gets an Off-Road is not going to want Blind spot, blah, blah, blah... and I go online with him to show him over 5 trucks just like what I want that show in inventory for the south-east...

Even told him that I do not mind if they come with additional options. For example: The Tonneau cover... not the one I like, I want a Roll-N-Lock unit, but I could live with the Toyota unit. ; or some Cast Aluminum Running Boards

They are selling everything they get. They really do not have to go overboard to service just one more customer... good for them. Just means one less truck sale for them when hundreds more would just take whatever they have coming in the next truck. Pitty. I will just wait for the frenzy to be over and then go to another dealer (two strikes with this one already...)

Not with Toyota. They can either locate the vehicle at another dealer and buy from them for wholesale or they can make minor option changes to a vehicle they have been allocated.

Toyota dealers cannot just say "build this with these options". They can only see they are assign a dc sport, add tech package, or add other features.

You've got it right. First they try to find a truck that already exists in that config and bring it to you. If it does not exist, but it can exist, then they have to go check the factory build list and request the next one coming out of the pipe. So in that sense it isn't ordering because Toyota was going to build it anyway whether or not you were ever born. But it is ordering because if you didn't request it it would have probably ended up somewhere else.

Toyota builds every config on their list in a mix that their marketing/sales department has predicted will be demanded. The factory builds to macroscopic market demands, not individual demands. But individual demand is what drives market demand so there is some feedback. Also, during the rollout period everything is kind of up in the air as inventories are retarded the factory can't respond to any particular config demands because everything is in demand.

They also don't do much batch processing meaning that every possible config comes out of the factory regularly. It shouldn't be very long before the config you are looking for comes out of the factory. I don't know the exact figures but for example they don't wait until some particular day and build all the v6 manual trucks they expect will be needed for the next 4 months. Batch processing like that in the automotive industry is not efficient because you have to sit on a bunch of expensive and bulky production inventory while you wait for its day to come.

This is not like other manufacturers, such as Ford and Chevy, that build trucks to order. The Tacoma especially does not have the production capacity to handle special snowflake builds. Toyota has more of a cookie cutter thing going on. But damned if it ain't efficient as fuck.
