I'm a bit new to selecting tires and wheels, and I couldn't find an answer to my question on the forums.

I want to purchase these wheels from tirerack.com. I also want to keep my stock size tires LT265/70R16. The problem is, when I try to purchase a Tire/Wheel package and select those wheels, the recommended tire size pops up as LT255/70R16, which is 1" less diameter. From what I can tell, there shouldn't be a problem with these wheels and LT265/70R16, so why don't I get that option? Or do those tires not fit the wheels for some reason?

no idea what it's talking about. the tire will fit. the wheel width is only 8 inches and your stock tire width is 10.4 inches with the others being 10 AND 1 inch shorter on the diameter. i did some quick reading and saw that it will be a problem while on road...... If you're in a corvette trying to turn corners at 60 mph..... but as a steady as she goes driver, on and off, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. but IMO, get wheels that are 9 or 10 inches wide over these 8.

Thanks for the help. If I get 9 or 10 inch wide wheels, do I need a different size / wider tire?

nope. your stock tire size is already 10.4 inches wide. they're wide enough already. just make sure you get 16s so your current tires will mount.

I would not get 9 or 10 inch wide wheels. for one they will need a drastic offset. two it makes it look like a hooptie(sp?).

you want your rim width to be as close to the recommended width by the tire manufacturer. too wide and you start to lose support.

I generally like the rim width to be close to the tread width.

Thanks. I really like the wheels I picked out, which are 16x8, which are the same as stock. For now they're still at the top of my list, I also read that narrower handle better off road, which is half the reason I bought the truck.

stock are 16x7 (steel or alum). narrower vs wide depends on the type of terrain you will be traveling in so base it off how you will use it. tall & skinny (255/85R16) seem to be a favorite for their ability to go through some trails and rocks better :notsure:

see the chart, tread width is just a hair over 8"

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I'm going with Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, just need to decide if I want to try 265/75R16s instead. The truck has worn shocks and struts so I'll probably lift it a couple inches when I replace those, but a little worried about rubbing in the meantime.

even with worn suspension 265/75 will be fine. possibly a tiny bit of rub full turn and maybe if you flex it to it's max but overall it's small enough to fit in the wheel-well.

I'm confused, you stated that the stock rim is 16x7 but the chart says rim width is 8". I need clarification because I have stock rims and looking at also buying wrangler duratrac tires but the 285/75/r16 size. And those recommenda rim width of 7.5-9 so I don't want to get them if the rim is only 7"

first, welcome to the 1st Gen section :)

    second, recommended doesn't mean necessary.

and yes your stock rims (steel, or SR5/OR rims) are 16x7, the sport rim is 17x7.5

I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure you can still put 285 on 7" rim.

Ha, my bad, didn't realize I was in the wrong section. But thank you for your input. I think I'll pull the trigger on the tires and upgrade my rims to some XD 818s once I'm not broke

I have 285-75-16's on stock rims (black 16 hole spares) and never had an issue. Airing down isn't a problem either.

I suggest www.onlinetires.com for your tire/ wheel purchase. They are 20 minutes past Knott's Berry Farm in the LA area.

For example, General Grabber ATII's in the San Diego area were $292.00 each, these guys had them for $171.00. I spent $32.00 in gas to pick them up myself which netted me a savings of $456.00.

    Hope this helps you.
