I thought some of you might be interested to see the specs and pricing for the Hilux, how it differs from the new Tacoma and the pricing (in Australia dollars).

Pricing and specifications for the 2016 Toyota HiLux have finally been revealed.

The launch of the new, eighth-generation Toyota HiLux ute comes at a crucial time – there has been more activity in the light-commercial vehicle segment this year than in recent memory, with new models and updates all taking the shine off what has been the best-selling model in the segment for years.

Indeed, HiLux sales are in something of a slump, as existing stock of the previous-generation model sells out. In August, the Ford Ranger outsold the Toyota HiLux for the first time, while the Mitsubishi Triton also managed to top its Japanese rival.

Still, the HiLux remains the top-seller overall for 2015, and it is also Toyota’s second-most popular model in Australia.

Toyota Australia president, Dave Buttner, said at the launch of the new HiLux in Victoria this week that the company understands the importance of this model, which replaces the seventh-generation model that was on sale from 2005-2015.

“We’ve sold just on 2.1 million vehicles, and 18 per cent of that 2.1 million vehicles has been this product,” said Buttner.

“We never take success for granted. We cannot be arrogant and conceited in the marketplace.”

And with 31 variants – eight more than before – including a dozen 4×2 models and 19 4×4 versions, there is no doubting that the brand is eager to stay in the number one spot in the ute segment.

    Pricing and equipment

With this update, buyers will be happy to learn that things aren’t dramatically different to the model it replaces in terms of pricing – but standard equipment levels on all models have risen considerably in light of new and revamped competition.

Standard fitment to all new-generation Toyota HiLux models is air conditioning – can you believe it was still a $2051 option on Workmate models? – as well as a touchscreen media system and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming.

The entry models get a 6.1-inch screen, while upper spec models have a 7.0-inch unit with extended connectivity, and the flagship model gets satellite navigation and digital radio. It’s the first ute in the class to come with a touchscreen as standard across the range.

    2015 Toyota HiLux 4x2 Workmate single cab-chassis

Every HiLux now gets seven airbags as standard, including dual front, front-side and curtain airbags, along with a driver’s knee airbag. All models in the pick-up/tub-back genre will have a reverse-view camera as standard, while it’s optional on cab-chassis models, too. Dual-cab HiLux models now get ISOFIX child restraints for the outboard rear seats with top-tether straps.

The entry point to the range is the Workmate, while the mid-range offering is the SR and the flagship model remains the SR5 (though buyers can specify a SR5+ for the diesel auto dual-cab).

What engines are offered depends on the specification.

    Drivetrains on offer

As we’ve previously reported, the new HiLux range will come with a choice of two petrol (a four-cylinder and a six-cylinder) and two diesel (both four-cylinder) engines.

The carryover 2.7-litre naturally aspirated four-pot petrol has been uprated to 122kW and 245Nm, and according to the brand it’s been reworked for better consumption and refinement. That engine comes with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.

Fuel use for that engine is claimed between 10.7 and 11.1 litres per 100km for the manual (depending on bodystyle), and 10.4-10.9L/100km for the auto.

For the very few buyers who wish for a larger petrol engine there is a revamped 4.0-litre six-cylinder producing 175kW of power and 376Nm of torque.

    2015 Toyota HiLux 4x4 SR5 double cab

This engine will be offered with a six-speed auto only (fuel use: 11.5L/100km for the 4×2 and 12.0L/100km for the 4×4).

The entry-level diesel is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo unit producing 110kW of power and 343Nm of torque for the 4×2 models, and 110kW and 400Nm of torque for the 4×4 variants. It’s interesting to note that this new 2.4 has more power and equal torque to the old 3.0-litre diesel.

The all-new 2.8-litre turbo diesel produces 125kW of power and 343Nm in 4×2 models, while the Hi-Rider and 4×4 models have 130kW and 450Nm for the auto models and 420Nm for the manual models.

    Body styles

As for the structure of the line-up, buyers can – as expected – choose from a range of cab-chassis or pick-up models.

    In the 4×2 model line there are single-cab-chassis, extra-cab pick-up, and dual-cab pick-up bodystyles, while the 4×4 range includes single-cab-chassis, extra-cab-chassis and extra-cab pick-up, and dual-cab-chassis and dual-cab pick-up bodies.

There is no single-cab pick-up bodystyle, and the extra-cab now has a rearward-opening door for easier back seat access.

2015 Toyota HiLux 4x4 SR extra cab

    Measurements and capacities

It is worth noting that the best towing capacity of any automatic model is 3200kg (for the 2.8 diesel), which is just better than that of the Triton and less than many of its rivals (such as the Holden Colorado, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Ford Ranger) which claim 3500kg capacity. That capacity is available in HiLux manual models with the 2.8 diesel.

For those interested in a dual-cab, the pick-up model’s tray size has increased to a more competitive capacity. The length is now 1569mm (up 19mm) and it is much wider than before, now 1645mm (up 79mm) – but the width between the arches is 1109mm, too small for a standard Aussie pallet (1165mm x 1165mm). Toyota claims the cab-chassis is more likely to appeal to those who need to move pallets regularly.

The depth of the cargo hold is 481mm (up 20mm) and the load-in height to the tray is now lower by 4mm (now 861mm).

Here’s a full breakdown of the payload and towing capacity of every model in the new-generation HiLux range:

    4×2:

    Single-cab-chassis:

    Workmate 2.7 petrol manual – towing: 2500kg; payload: 1225kg

lol so your comparing a truck that cannot be bought in north America (Hi-Lux) to a truck that is exclusive to north America (Tacoma).

Everyone seems to get all over themselves around here about a Hilux and diesel, so I'm sure someone will enjoy the read. You never know, it may convince someone to move to Australia.

Wish we had factory LED headlights and a glove comparment that keeps your drinks cool! They also still use the gen2 4.0 V6 and I like their accessory mad max bumpers and mats.

The Diesel engines are that good though, looking back to the 3.4, 4.0, and now 3.5 I'd still choose the 3.0 or 2.8 TD. I have the 3.0, no complaints about it at all, it just goes and still delivers 25MPG.

In Australia they wish the Hilux and Prado had the aggressive styling of the Tacoma and 4Runner. We will have the Fortuner in Australia soon, essentially the SUV version of the Hilux.

This is the most confusing thing ever. The Taco isn't mentioned in the post so how can it be a side-by-side comparison? Especially when nothing is in the same units.
Is that American dollars for pricing?

Care to share some pics of yours? I think it's good that TW is expanding and reaching other countries. There was another thread not too long ago where someone else with a Hilux joined.

Good info thanks for sharing. The thread title is misleading. I do wish we could have more choices in drivetrains and also single cab models but at the same time I understand why we don't get other options in the states yet. Always optimistic more choices will be available in the future.

Did you read the first sentence?

I thought some of you might be interested to see the specs and pricing for the Hilux, how it differs from the new Tacoma and the pricing (in Australia dollars).

Second, I never said it was a side by side comparison, most folks who are interested in the 3rd Gen Tacoma know what features and specs are available. I posted this in case anyone was interested in seeing what options (and prices) were slated for the just released Hilux. If you don't understand how the 3rd Gen Tacoma and new Hilux are related then I can't help you any further.

The single cab manual 4x4 2.4L diesel has 295 lb. ft. of torque and costs about $26,000 USA dollars not counting the tray. I would gladly pay that.

That 4x4 workmate sounds sweet with the diesel and manual.
