I would like to ask about wheel bearings -

Specifically about 2007 Tacoma base 2WD rear wheel bearings.

How long do they typically last under average-use conditions? I have 150K on mine and I do haul some weight routinely - maybe 600-700 lbs - and they seem to be making some noise. Last time I fiddled with the truck (replaced the u-joints in the driveshaft to solve a vibration issue) spinning the rear wheels by hand seemed to make some 'rough bearing' sounds.

How long to do they typically last?
Has anyone ever changed their rear wheel bearings themselves?
How big of a deal is it likely to be?

Most of the rear bearings last well over 150k miles from my experience. They are supported much better than the front (Because the front have to turn constantly) The rear do require a press and special tools to do the job properly. I have seen others try shortcuts and other methods, only to fail in getting them done right.

Yes they do. The difference being that with the assemblies like I make you can buy it all pre-pressed and ready to install. Making a rear "kit" would be too expensive, so it would be more cost efficient to take a new bearing and the axle shaft assy to a shop with the special tools and press.

    I have a bearing press.

My thought at this point is to bolt the 4-bolt flange 'up' to a heavy press plate and then push the axle out of the bearing assembly.

Afterwards use a 3' length of pipe over the axle to push the new bearing assembly back into place.

    Opinion?

That is in general how it is done. The special tool is essentially a pipe with a flange on one end to bolt to the bearing housing, and a solid plate on the other to place on the press. Many presses are not long enough so measure out the clearance you have. But in general you have it figured out!

Well your truck is pre-rruner with 200k miles so most likely grease is all gone now, may as well change them.
