I'm in Victoria...almost no places to off road here. The whole south Island is gated. That's what my dual sport is for :)

I guess what im looking for, is cool areas where i can get my truck up and above the alpine, everything is most likely too steep or thick forest to get through though. Theres lots of 4x4 stuff to do around here but none of it goes anywhere, its like the highschool kids driving down the power lines and what not. All the cool stuff is accessible by car. Looking for stuff cars cant go lol.

Grew up on the island but moved to van burbs in my mid twenties. Have you bought a back road map book? They are great for following trails out and finding new spots, use them all the time on the mainland and for summer trips on the island.

This is Mount Arrowsmith logging road. It's just an unpaved road really. Super cool place. There are some awesome spots for camping here. Not sure if camp fires are allowed on the mountain though. (What's a camping without a bonfire eh?) Personally, I'm not a hardcore outdoorsy person but definitely thirsty for semi offroading adventures.
I would love to hear you guys' adventure stories on the island.
Having such an awesome landscape, I think VI should be developed as a giant offroading Mecca like Moab, Utah.

Having said that, BC Ferries should get their shit together and rethink about their fares. The ferry route is a highway for shit's sake, not a fucking cruise ship.. Get rid of the whitespot restaurant and the news paper cart pushing staff. Smash the union into pieces so that their below-average-tasting-burger flipping staffs, who certainly aren't engaged in any value added activity, don't get paid like $25 / hour plus some insane benefit package.
Be cost effective. Cut down on wage expense. See this is the aftermath of privatization of a public corporation to incompetent idiots. Just follow what Wahington state ferry does, and you shall fare better BC Ferries.

Agree, I don't live in BC, but my parents have a cabin there. I make a trip up for some fishing and drinking once a year. It takes two ferry trips on from Horshoe bay to Langdale and the other from Earls cove to Saltery bay. Round trip I'm looking at over $160 for just my truck, if I include a boat...the price really hurts

Privatizing the Ferries system definitely has led to the current " for maximum profits " mantra they operate under now , I don't think the ship board employee wages are the real issue as much as the amount of managerial dead weight there is in the system . The current cost for a vehicle is probably not that crazy when you add up the costs associated with running the ships , my problem is that now that the provincial government sees it less of an extension of the highway system and more of a private operation , smaller routes that lose money are getting cut in favour of profit making routes .

    Thanks for your comment.
FYI, Experience card savings are not available on the routes I travel(Vancouver-Nanaimo routes), as per BC Ferries website.
I do agree with you that sending a few crews/staffs home won't save them very much.
What I wanted to say is, BC Ferries should not be a profit oriented organization given that the nature of the business is to provide a transportation link vital to the residents and the communities on coastal BC. Not to fuel the shareholders' greed . It should be offering very reasonable fares to the public even if it means they operate at a loss.
