I have been looking to add a hitch, or tow package whatever you call it, to my 2003 tacoma. But the ones that I have found are in the $160-$180 range. The thing the get me is they make ones that are in the $100-$120 range so can I buy one of the cheaper ones? and what would the model number be on the cheaper hitch so I don't buy the wrong one. What hitches do you guys and gals use on your first gen tacoma?

My Tacoma had a hitch already, but I bought one for my wife's car off of etrailer.com. It's a great site.

1st question has to be.....What exactly are you planning on hauling? Then take it to a truck shop that specializes in Hitches and they will tell you what kind and what strength you really need.

I bought mine off of craigslist. I believe it was a uhaul. There are different classes or hitch. I, II, III depending on what you plan to tow you'll need to select the right class. I have a class III. Tows a 20ft boat fine.

    Pretty much stock right now
Got a Curt a few years ago on-line. It's a type III for Tacomas. At the time it was cheaper than other brands. Fairly easy to put on and there have been no issues.

Excellent excuse to buy a fancy new rear bumper, plate or tube, that already has a reciever built into the bumper...just an idea.

I have a hitch for sale for $100. Originally $350. Sits in my garage. I kick it every so often... it hurts. U haul has decent hitches for about the same price (ish).
Bought a new HD bumper. I've posted it on CL a few times (still there), all the lowballers come out of the woodwork. Where are you located. PM me and we can talk.

    I just build my own!!

It comes down to just what your trying to pull

It is only as strong as the hardware mounting it and the rear section of truck frame.

One can get the best made Class 3 Hitch and use grade 2 Chinese Bolts .

I bought this one 3 years ago: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pro-Series-...ailer-Hitch-/131298947750?hash=item1e9206f2a6

solid as a rock and super strong and very well made.

don't pay extra for a fancy name, this is all you need to buy

what I liked about this one is its all welded as one solid unit so it doesn't have to be bolted together in pieces.

the only negative about it is it comes as you see it, one solid unit unboxed so there will be a few scratches from the delivery guy sliding it around in the truck but I didn't care about that and a quick shot of rattle can paint would fix it if it bothers you.

I had to replace my factory tow harness. I bought it from autozone it plugged into the factory wiring in the taillights and then grounded under the truck and I zip tired the converter box up took about 10 mins yo install

I use 7 pin plugs for all my vehicles.

    Makes fixing trailer lights easier.
