Synthetic Oil?

Hey all,
So, I'm hoping you guys can help me figure something out: I've been getting conventional oil changes in my 2014 V4 Tacoma Single cab, and recently I was informed by a mega dealership that I needed to get full-synthetic oil changes for that engine. He also told me that I'd need to get it changed every 5000 miles.
My questions are:
A) Do I need to use full synthetic oil in my engine?
B) How frequently should I change the oil if it's full-synthetic for my engine?

 

You don't absolutely need it, but it will help prolong your engine life. I've been using Mobil 1 since about the second change, and I do drop it every 5000. It's running great.

 

Good question OP, when I bought my truck, they offered a 'free oil change for life' when I bring my truck to the dealership but I have to bring it there or one of there sister dealers. They don't offer it for synthic oil and if I do want it I pay the difference which I think was 58 dollars CAN. Now, I've asked a few times, two doffernce people at the dealership about switching to synthic and they say it's not need if you keep up with doing it every 5000km( not miles).

So I'm interestes in see what people think also!

'12+ 2.7 engines call for 0w-20 synthetic.....comes with it from the factory. Even with synthetic, Toyots calls for a 5K OCI. All in the manual.

 

As stated, the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder engine in the newer Tacoma's calls for

0W20 oil, and that is not available in non-synthetic oil. They even tell you that if you can't get 0W20, it is "okay" to use 5W20 but to switch back to 0W20 at first opportunity.

As to oil change interval, while synthetic oil may keep its lubricity properties longer, one of the main reasons for changing your oil is to replace the additives that get used up and to get rid of the combustion by-products that are what causes your oil to look dirty and dark after time. You don't want that crap floating around in your engine over a prolonged period and building up on parts.

Pick any flavor of 0w-20 synthetic oil and a filter of your choice. Change it every 5K miles. You're all set....enjoy life.

I run Mobil 1 full synthetic in my motor. For oil filters I stick with OEM. I do oil changes every 5,000 miles.

I had a 98 Tacoma, I also had free oil changes with conventional as long as I owned the vehicle, I owned the vehicle for 18 yrs and the dealer did every oil change. About yr 9 they switched to a synthic blend and I got that also. Truck ran fine, oil always clean and never burned a drop.

Plus my dealer also had chocolate chip cookies while you wait. So I looked forward to getting my oil changed for free and getting free cookies.

 

He has a V-4 (hehe) not a V6.

I use the best oil and change it as if it were the worst. That should keep the truck healthy.
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum every 5K. Oil Analysis recommended 8K but I'm gonna stick with 5

 

80's F1? 120°. Mmmm

 

Or an old Saab.....or outboard motor perhaps.

Toyota recommends 10K OCI in all it's cars and some SUV's that use 0w-20. But not trucks. My guess is that Toyota understands that there's a good chance a truck will be used under "severe duty conditions" and recommends the 5K OCI as a precaution.

 

I would highly recommend sticking with synthetic in the 2.7 of the 0w20 flavor. As someone who works in the oil industry, there's no real point in arguing over what oil is best. Out of all the name brands of oil you see on the shelf, only about 3 companies make it all. Pick whatever color bottle makes you sleep good at night and run it.

That said, I prefer to run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my 3.4 V6 at 7.5k OCI's. It has returned the best results for me, quieter engine, and zero oil consumption. I used to religiously use Mobil 1 and burned through about half a quart every 3k. Now my engine doesn't use a drop of Ultra in 7500 mile intervals. If you really want to get in depth about oil, head over to bob is the oil guy (BITOG) forums and read. There are several rainy days worth of reading that can be done there on oil including test results from people that send used oil samples off to Blackstone labs to see how well the oil is performing in their engines. Lots of great information over there.

 

What makes good oil are the additive packages, and the base stocks. You want a good oil that can resist heat break-down better? Use a synthetic. You want a good oil which can protect your rotating components from contact and wear? Look up which ones have high antiwear additive packages.
