So my work requires me to travel all over W TN. I can be anywhere from Nashville to any border west of Nashville. I've been catching up on The Walking Dead lately and got to thinking. In the off chance of a catastrophe what do I need to get home? I have already made a small bag with some stuff to go it onfoot but I'd much rather drive.

Here is my question: what basic tools do I need in my truck so that I can get home on four tires stead of two feet?

In my truck, I have a basic mechanics tool set for Sears with assorted sockets, a ratchet, some wrenches and a couple screw drivers. I also carry a utility knife, zip ties, duct tape, fix-a-flat goo, some hose clamps and a lighter. Tow straps are always nice to have, so is a flashlight and a first aid kit.

I'm in the process of a vehicle bug out bag myself. Not really as much tools as actual survival items. It's a work in progress pretty much

I carry a basic tool kit as others mentioned, plus recovery gear and jumper cables. In addition I have a Ka-bar tucked between my seat and console, and carry a .380.

I keep a bag of medical supplies with me with signaling devices. I think that is an Army carryover honestly.

Thanks, mwc273. I've seen those before but never knew what they were called. Also, I like seeing turned down toes!

Stay out of Memphis and you should be alright. Got my truck broke into this weekend.

All they got was an old briefcase with a busted zipper, reached over $$$ of climbing gear.

That got me to thinking of keeping a dummy bag for the thieves, in a rush they'll grab what visually has the most potential and overlook other things. The good stuff is stored out of site.

I'm not really a prepper. I lived through Katrina in La and have seen my share of tornadoes. My school was flattened a few years before I started. I'm just a married Eagle scout who wants to always be able to make it home to my wife. I was confident in my abilities to fix my Jeep but this new truck is way more complex. Thanks for the ideas!

I mounted a safe behind the back seats and am really happy about how it turned out. It's not a bombproof safe but definitely thwarts any smash and grab or folks without the right tools.
