I test drove a 2012 DCSB with the 4 banger and remember it being loud and underpowered. I'm really curious how much effect the 6 speed tranny, quieter cabin, and dual vvti will have. The SR pricing and options are appealing. So far all dealers in my area only have the 3.5L.

I thought the wheel color would be slight darker/blacker. I wouldn't mind having them powder coated to a gloss black similar to the 2015 SR wheels below.

quick question, are the 16-in black alloy wheels part of the convenience package or are they a separate option? they are not showing up on the toyota website's Build & Price for me

Thanks for the write up on this. I've been holding off on a 2015 V6,waiting to drive the 2016 SR I4. I better call the dealer and get the 6 before it's gone.

If the 2wd is that sluggish the 4wd must be even more so.

I don't doubt the new(old) 4 banger in the 3rd gen is underpowered and no one should have to suffer one, especially with an auto. The numbers are questionable though.

    A 2005 4x4 I4 5MT AC is 3870 lbs. http://www.toyota120.com/GenDocs/2005_Tacoma_s.pdf
    A 2016 4x4 I4 5MT AC (SR) is 4195. http://www.toyota.com/tacoma/ebrochure/
    The auto 4x4 is 4220.

That's 325/345 lbs heavier. If it was a 2016 4x2 auto that one is 3980, only 120lbs difference.

Any felt a difference in performance shouldn't have been due to weight. Blame the auto. It's always the autos fault.

The curb weight difference isn't as much as you thought.

Perhaps it might be a better comparison to drive a 5MT version of the 2016 instead? :)

It says the 2016 2.7l 4x4 MT access cab's weight is 4195 compared to the 2006 at 3890. A difference of 305lbs. That's still quite a bit of added weight for a 4 cyl.

Oh it's definitely heavier, no doubt, but still comparing a manual to an auto, even a good auto, it'll feel different.

    Jeff,

Do you have any insider information or inclinations as to whether or not they're ever going to replace the base 2.7 liter engine, or retune it for more hp? It's certainly just adequate at this point.

That's really too bad. When I bought my truck, I tried out a standard cab 2014 I4 4x4 and it had acceptable around town performance. It really struggled on the open road with the poor 4 sp auto. I thought the 6 speed would fix it up but didn't plan on the weight gain going to the extended wheel base. This has to be a terrible truck and utterly useless in 4x4 127 inch wheel base and just 159 hp. They are obviously pushing the six for a while.

Fast Lane Truck tried out the Colorado 2 wd extended cab 4 cylinder and were impressed with the 200 hp four and the six speed auto. That would seem like an easy engine HP for Toyota to come up with...,but they are definitely looking to max out the profit the first year or TEN.

I went to the local dealer yesterday and drove the 2016. it was a two wheel drive SR access cab 4 cyl automatic. After driving it i definitely know that 4 cyl is not for me.I guess the power was ok but the motor was constantly revving/working to reach and attain speed.
I like the look of the truck exterior though.Interior looks pretty cool looking in from outside, once inside it didn't really impress me. Just my thoughts.
