Really? How do you think they get to islands in the Caribbean? I don't think they are flown in.

Hawaii just got some new Tacomas I saw on this forum. I take it they took a boat there and didn't drive the Tacomas there.

Actually, the Hawaii trucks drove there. Sources close to Toyota say the drivers were instructed to keep the engines above 3000 RPM with ECT in use.

That ship most likely did not have any vehicles on it, or it would be strange to see them. Its a container ship, designed to carry containers, not vehicles. Vehicle transports are roll on, roll off (ro ro for slang). They are much more efficient for vehicle transport.

I didn't write the article but it clearly states is was full of Cars, Trucks and trailers and Yes they absolutely use containers to move vehicles.

I hear the US Government is sick of the 2016 wuss motor so we are sending all the gen 3's over to Syria/Iraq for ISIS to use.

Vehicle transport in containers is less than Ideal. It happens, but its usually better to use the proper equipment. BTW I did graduate from a maritime academy... and virtually all my friend work in the maritime industry... This is my understanding of how it works. I'm not sure of the accuracy of that statement in the article, but who knows.

One can never have too many light bars.

Over the years Navy sonar has picked up hundreds of cars at the bottom of the Atlantic and Pacific that have been dropped into the sea. Mercedes even discloses on their audits that they have to write off inventory every year from cars destined for the US falling into the North Atlantic. Another reason why most companies would rather just build factories here and take the risk out of the equation.

Yep RIP to the crewman. What a tragedy. Don't mess with mother nature. It takes a lot to bring down one of these ships.

With that said... I guarantee you new Tacoma wasn't in those containers. They sometimes transport personal cars in a container (used) but rarely brand new shipments if ever. I drive brand spanking new cars/trucks on/off ships from Asia. Roll on roll off. Housed inside the ship protected from the elements. Lashed to the deck. It's an amazing setup that works well. Amazing that they are parked with inches of each other and rarely get damaged. Think of a tightly packed parking structure on the ocean. Typically they hold up to 5,000 cars/trucks or more.

The containers are just not a safe place to crap a brand new car.

p.s. I drove brand new 2016 Tacomas onto the ship last week. Not sure where it went (Canada or Asia). It felt solid driving up the ramp on the steel grate. Took the turns nice and sharp. Can't wait to buy one.

Yep that's it. Drove a ton of Rav4, Scion, 4runners off the ship the other day.

A few days a go it was Nissan Rogue all day. Not a bad car. Interior was a lot better looking than previous years

Has anyone ever messed up and totaled a car in transit? I used to work for enterprise and drove cars to different branches all day and there would be a significant crash every few months.

Sympathies to the crew and their families. Lot of loss for a poor decision.

Some lawyers are gonna get rich off the law suits that will ensue for the ship leaving port. Hurricanes are fairly predictable and comparatively slow moving. There is pretty much no reason for any shipping to get caught in one. SOP is to out run them, skirt them, wait them out, etc.

Not just blithely mosey on out and hope for the best.

Oh it's gonna be a mess. I work in the insurance field and we do a fair amount of business writing ocean cargo policies. The Companies that insured the actual cargo are going to go at the owner of the Ship hard for allowing it to leave port. It will be over five years before it get resolved.

Messed up. Yes, it happens. It's tight inside that ship and they want those cars pumped out fast. Also lashing gear isn't bullet proof. Totaled, not that I've heard of but I'm sure it happens.
