Driving along and I thought I see a piece of cardboard, regardless I try and drive around it however the flow of traffic was pretty heavy so I couldn't do it safely. I drive over it and hear that metal sound clank. I go fuck, then with every wheel rotation I hear tsss tsss tsss, then I was even more mad. Had less than a km to my house so I made it there. Parked the truck and saw this. Brand new truck less than 3,000 kms. That piece of old rusty metal heat shield sliced the side wall on the tire. Nice.

Is it possible to swap the rubber on the spare onto that rim and just grab a junky spare somewhere else? The spare said temporary use only. I wasn't sure if that referred to the steel wheel or the tire.

It definitely is possible. I'm not sure why the spare says, "Temporary use only," as the tire is a full size Grantrek AT20. I would swap the spare onto that rim, and pick up a cheap used tire to mount on the spare rim.

That's a nice spot for it. Seems like the buttons on the back would be easy to get to being placed here.

Was that marked on the wheel or the tire? If it is just on the wheel, make a good comparison of the spare tire to what is on the truck. But I wouldn't trust a junky tire as my spare, though.

Could it be a lesser quality tire? Like maybe a different speed rating or something. A guy at work said his truck has a spare tire that is the same size and all but not the same quality which would mark it as "temporary use only" not sure exactly. Might end up calling the stealership to check, however those a holes will probably tell me to come on in and buy a new tire.

Yeah maybe it's a different weight which over a long period of time could mess some stuff up?

I know for a fact that the spare AT20 that came on my truck was was identical to the AT20's on the OEM rims. So speed/load rating of the spare is the same.

Well I also have a 15 sr5. Mines double cab though. I assume I would be in the same situation then. Unless they screw us Canadians up here (wouldn't be surprised) I wonder why they write temporary use only then? To sucker you into buying a new one? Lol

"Temporary use only" is related only to lack of TPMS sensor, requirement of one for regular use, and liability.
