    A diesel is only necessary if you do heavy duty towing. I don't the most I have ever towed was I think 15,000lbs.
    I use payload more than anything.

    I road trip to the family farm very often. Would love a diesel so I can keep the truck for a half a million miles but I don't want to maintinence if a diesel.

    Why are you so bitter and argumentative on this?
    The fact that some people need or want a full-size shouldn't be taken as a personal attack.

    MSRP is irrelevant in this analysis since Ford will knock off $12k while the discount on Tacomas is like $3k.

    Yup. You can go around that circle like a dog on a chain. Tacoma holds value but costs more off the bat in ratio to MSRP. Either way both trucks hold there value fairly well. As far as money goes they will both keep well for trade in value.
