87 4Runner: Waterproofing/Replacing Seats

    My best friend has an 87 4Runner, and the seats are in poor shape. He is debating on what to do with them, because he wants them to be waterproof. I suggested getting waterproof seat covers, but he said that is a last resort. He just wants to reupholster the seats and make them waterproof, or buy new seats and waterproof them. Anyone waterproofed their seats, or recommend a vendor that sells waterproof seats, or should I just tell him to get seat covers? Open to any recommendations.
