All you can do is tell them to relax be comfortable fix any mistakes .

Then if the machine they are using has any strange habits you should inform them.

Then zero out the machine and say good luck.

4'' plate to 4'' plate. wonder how far the weld actually penetrates. sorry it's blurry. took the picture at 5 this morning.

Here I thought you were having a bad day.

Just what is being built ??

Any Chance those welds could cause a serious failure down the road.??

What form of transfer is this?
Nah these are my welds from the same silo that we were working on uploadfromtaptalk1444428775189.jpg

They couldn't cause a major failure but it is definitely gonna be a maintenance problem. The plates are fully welded on all sides so a couple shitty welds is highly unlikely to just cause the plate to fall off. However once cracks develop and coal starts falling through the cracks, its gonna need to be addressed.

What we are doing is plating the outside of a coal silo because the walls are getting thin from the constant flow.

Finally buttoned up the blue star today, gotta do an oil change and figure out why it's always at high idle now.
Runs good other than the high idle, fuel flow is good with the relocated tank and deleted fuel pump, I should probably relocate the exhaust though.

no idea. it's the weighted front bumper to our heavy-haul subcontractor

two 4'' plates welded around the perimeter, with 3 holes on the centerline, with "dowels" welded in.

I'm sure they had some sort of bevel in there. At least you'd hope so cause you'd get practically zero penetration with butt welding material that thick

It really will not matter on the heavy hauler there is no vertical load the three pieces of bar stock would be enough to hold it together .

More then likely just to add some weight to front of the tractor

I would guess the other welds are just for pretty and to keep dirt out.

Wow you put the plates on the outside rather then the inside of the coal hopper /bin around these parts we put the wear plates on the inside.

Did a few in Stainless to make things flow easier.

It is a shame some people take no pride in there work then some just don`t care.

it's 100% to add weight. I forget what the stamp on it said, but they had the front bumper weight, and then a 12.5 ton weight strapped to the flatbed. this load was only 350,000 lbs, but with our heavier loads, the truck needs some ass to maintain control at "higher speeds" on public roads, and to keep from spinning tires on the construction roads.

I would be worried about the weight of it mixed with the jarring of potholes and stuff on the road cracking the welds but I guess this is where engineers know more and better(Not sarcastic or rude BTW).

And yea we had to put em on the outside since the silos have some liner on the inside that they didn't want welding on apparently. But idk that for sure. I'm not the boss. Just a hand.

If you look at the front face of the bumper, those three circles you see are pins that go straight through all 8 inches of steel, and are welded on either side. They look like 4" round stock, so it'd be pretty hard to shear all three and break the welds before someone catches it.

There are plenty of ways to get good penetration on thick plates. That's why different weld processes exist. I've seen welding processes as high as 1500 amps, and have personally welded on 2" thick bull dozer tracks with 700 amps. A 300 amp mig welder isn't shit.

Southern Maryland, right on the Chesapeake Bay.

we built a barge trestle where all of our big or heavy loads come in. they get off-loaded from the barge and set up on the heavy haul trailers there, and then are driven ~5 miles up the road to the plant. no bridges to cross or go under, and no overhead power lines to go under, so really the biggest obstacle is just coordination with state and local police to get the 3:00 am escorts. luckily I don't have to do that. I only take charge once it's on site.
