That awkward moment when you learn more about your field of study from a stranger on the internet than you did from the degree you payed almost 40k for.... genuine thank you for the knowledge good sir.

You guys work in an interesting industry. My ex brother in law went to them MMA and eventually got his captains license. The absolute coolest license anywhere - it literally read "Any Ocean, Any Tonnage". So we can all take our cute little licenses and go home.

Actually, that ship was RO-RO, with containers above deck. My guess is it did have vehicles on it, but probably used vehicles.

Yep. New cars in the racks at Matson. I wasn't referring to those. I'm speaking of the actual enclosed shipping containers that I've only seen small cars and small trucks get into, used.

Not my intention, there's just been a lot of "experts" cropping up on the news and elsewhere about an industry that isn't really all that big or well known to those outside of it. I'm not claiming to be an expert, it just happens that I have some experience with this particular niche of the industry.

My degree was closer to 60k ;) There are a lot of nooks and crannies within this industry. It wasn't til I was out of school and actually sailing that my education really began.

I dunno, "Any Ocean, Any Tonnage" doesn't sound as cool to me as "Unlimited Horsepower" :p

Gotcha. Lots of people don't realize that the car racks have the same outside dimensions as a container and go into the stacks with the rest of the containers. From what I remember seeing on the Horizon boats, those car racks were in the stack closest to and in front of the house. I honestly can't say for sure though since usually when I had the chance to see them I'd just been picked up by the shuttle to run me into town and my attention was on my phone. Are you west coast ILWU?

Gosharootee. Don't I just feel so apologetic now.
I know the family of one of the missing crew, they live down the road from where I grew up. I saw you making light of their loss, got pissed, and didn't feel like reading through 3 pages to see if you'd posted anything else to make up for being a dick. So no offense, but I really don't care if I you think I need to 'try to keep up'

Not ilwu yet.. Been a casual for ten years. LA/LB. I still call myself a web designer. But we've been busy enough to be full time the past few years.

    RIP to the crew.

So in that scenario with the Ro-ro, are the vehicles accumulating miles or is that somehow cut off until it arrives at the dealer?

There is a shipping mode that I see in the dash when driving these cars on/off. Not sure if that's adding to the mileage readout. It can be a mile from train/truck to boat. Usually not more than half a mile.

I was wondering the same thing. Our truck had 11 miles on it when it was unloaded straight off the truck at the dealership. I'm curious how those miles get racked up before hitting dealer floors. With 11 miles was it possibly randomly picked as a test vehicle off the line?

There's an excellent chance we've crossed paths, especially if you've ever done cargo on the Marjorie C

I was the guy running around with a bucket checking tank levels while we took on fuel.

Well, it's only about 15,000 feet deep there. At the day rate for an ROV, you could go buy a Hilux or two in addition to a Tacoma or two
