I think it depends who you ask. Its 2016 truck, it should not have drum brakes anymore simple. Discs are better overall, they control braking much better, thats why in real life tests especially with ABS and VSC systems they perform amazing.
They are better for those who use truck for more than just a grocery getter. Discs clean themselves much betetr from sand dirt so if you drive through snow/slush or sand or mud, discs brakes are better for you. And thats not my opinion that is a fact repeated by thousands of trucks modified for offroading ( here is brake bible with a lot of info http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Brakes/)
So drums stop truck on dry nice pavement when is awesome weather. But once ideal conditions are gone they are not that good.
For probably 50%-60% people drum brakes makes no difference. the other 50%-40% could use Discs (number of people is just my opinion)

And yet I don't hear 40-50% of 2nd gen owners complaining that they could really use back disc brakes.

How many 2nd generation owners complained about the rear braking of their trucks?

GM took four full page ads in C+D this month including a double page and the back cover. Toyota took one page......Follow the money.

Toyota sold 17,000 Gen 2s in July a 29 percent increase since July 2014.....Colorado sold 7200...Car and Driver comparo won't help much.

Lol its funny, I actually seen that video and it doesn't really prove anything except that while intentionally burying a truck in sand the discs will make noise. Guess what happens after the truck is out of the sand though. It all falls out and the noise goes away. Meanwhile the drums could still be packed
    with sand.

OMG I think Blue T is gonna blow a gasket!

Now I don't know who to believe, a OEM sponsored utube video for semi trucks advocating front disc brakes, or the Chief engineer of a very successful vehicle explaining why his own product has rear drum brakes...

Hmm...front discs on a semi video from a company who wants an industry to change over and stands to make money if they do, or rear drums explanation from a chief engineer who is taking flack from media and forum heros for bucking the current trends.

I guess we all just believe what we want to believe and buy what we wanna buy.:rolleyes:. Now, where is my shark with a laser beam.

Wait so does the cheif engineer not stand to make any money by saving toyota money by convincing people that drums are better than discs?

Do you work for Toyota. I have never seen anyone work so hard to defend something that is clearly inferior. If what you say is true then all trucks would be using rear drums. There is really nothing else to say on the matter, so please just drop it.

Look you can believe whatever you want, its your right to believe in any stupid statement that comes from sneaky salesman.
Now lets make this simple and quick.

    1. You and Seatbelt bracket Mike claim that drums are better for offroading.
    2. Pirate4x4 and thousands off people who offroad, build dedicated trail rigs say discs are better. (and I 100% believe them)
    http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Brakes/

One of you has to be wrong...
SO are you telling me that according to you, everybody on Pirate4x4 are wrong and they just wasting their time and money upgrading to discs ? They should have upgraded to all drums ?

This is Yes or No answer. So try to focus and stay on topic...

I look at it this way. If the gen 3 came with 4 wheel disc brakes nobody would be wanting to convert them back to drums.

Except on that video those are not discs making noise. Anybody who drives on the beach will tell you those are drums making that noise.
We go every year to OBX and drive on the beach. I like to park my truck with rear axle buried so kids have easy access to bed. We bring two trucks My wife and mine since its hard to fit everybody to one. Wife's car has no drums and has no noise, my truck always gets that noise for couple first feet getting out of the sand.
Now even if nobody believes me here are couple of different videos of Land Cruiser (4 discs) digging itself up from sand... no noise.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMtgb91n88M
and Lexus (which is like LC)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl_h4HCuYKQ

    and
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRWBX-YxFfg

None have the noise all have 4 disc brakes..

People can believe Seatbelt bracket Mike but the guy is a nut job. Not sure why Toyota let him even open his mouth. No wonder 3gen is such a failure if that is the chief eng for it.

Idk I think it should be. It should be just as much of a topic as no power seat and no height adjustment for the seat. If toyota was any other manufacturer they would have these, hell the frontier has the option of an 8 way adjustable seat. Im not saying things should be included standard but give people the options they want, its good business practice.

Wow good to know, I also have 4 wheel disc on my forester that I took on the beach this year and didnt have any noise but I also didnt bury it so I wasnt sure. I would have honestly rather have heard the squeaking brake noise than the music in those second two videos lol.
