Laughed my way out of the dealership

Local dealer has a few and went to check them out, mainly just curious - not to actually buy. The inferno is nice, that orangish... not bad. Having my loaded '15 Sport they'd have to make a good offer for me to justify it, if I liked the '16 enough.

Drove an Off Road, loaded. So it does look better in person than on the computer screen, certainly have to admit that. The interior is nice and updated, good on Toyota. It has some features I like on it than mine wasn't even offered with. The ride seems to be better and road noise is quieter.

That's where the good stops. The wind noise seemed louder to me, don't know why. The motor loves to rev up, can't help but rev up. Just normal driving, not going fast, just staying with traffic it was always between 2000-3000 RPMs and sometimes over 3000 without even accelerating hard, and with the ECT (or whatever it is) off. On flat ground at 60 it seems to be around 1500, but as soon as I tried to accelerate even a little it would downshift into 5th. Give it a little gas to speed up, it drops down and RPMs shoot up. It just couldn't help but go up to 3000 RPMs all the time! Bottom end power, the 4.0 is way better.

On the way home, in my 4.0, I was driving with the same style and habit and it was usually between 1300-1700 instead of 2k-3k. Going up a good size hill at 35mph it was still at 1900 RPMs. To get a faster start it ran up to 2500 a couple times. The 3.5 just seems to run at least (and I do mean at least) 1000 RPMs higher under load. I recall reading a review where his new '16 wouldn't stay in 6th on the freeway, how useless. Highly disappointed with the bottom end of the motor and no way I'd give up the 4.0 for it.

Just to see what they'd offer I sat down before they gave some numbers. Before I got a number on my trade the sales guy asked a few times what kind of payment I want. Told him I don't care what the payment is, I'm interested in what they sell their truck for and what they give for mine. That's it. He was all about the monthly, typical tactic, started asking as soon as I looked at the truck.

Then he said Toyota doesn't let them discount the new '16s because they're new and selling. Told him about all the discounts I've been seeing on here. Then he suddenly changes to the best discount I might get is $1500-2000. So their $39k truck would be $37k. He comes back from the desk and says they could give me about $27k for my 2015 TRD Sport, DCSB, 5a, tow, JBL, not a scratch on it that KBB average trade in, not retail - but middle of the road trade in, amount of $31,639. They want a $10k difference between mine and theirs? lol....

laughed all the way out the door

And I stand firm on a 140mph speedo on that truck being stupid.

Few dealers in Socal are also playing the "we can get sticker+market adjustment" scheme. They still have the same truck from 2 weeks ago.

I agree with you that any dealer not willing to discount is loosing sales.

As far as the speedometer. So you ok with your your 2015 having a 120mph speedometer.?

Back in the 80's, alot of cars had 85MPH speedometers.

So you went in there with the full intention of not purchasing a vehicle ("not to actually buy"), but instead kick tires and rack up miles on a would be "real" purchasers truck and you're complaining about age old sales tactics?

My brothers Supra had one too. The speedo used to be buried but the Tachometer just kept on climbing.

So wait a second. You're saying a 6spd auto has a tendency to change gears more often than a 5spd?

Yep, I went there for all weather floor mats for my Taco with winter coming. A lot of vehicles are sold to people who didn't go there to buy. And yes, I put almost six whole miles on that truck, wow!

You would expect it to change gears more often than a 5 speed, but 6th is almost unusable if you're trying to accelerate at all. And running up to 3000 RPMs so easily? It didn't run under 2k at all under any light, gentle acceleration while the 4.0 goes up hills without breaking 2k. The 3.5 has no power down low. At all.

OP, sorry you got hosed on your trade. I traded my 2011 DCLB Taco Sport with 66k on the odometer. The dealer came back at me with 19k. I laughed, and told him he'd be selling it on his lot next week for 25k. KBB was 22.5k, and that's what I got.

The problem with automatic transmissions is that their automatics. Buy a real transmission with a clutch and you'll never have a problem with it not being in the gear you want :)

Stuck? I chose to buy it three months ago. Next up someone will use the jealousy argument lol. But it is great when someone simply states their opinion, you have other people attacking the messenger, rather than the message itself. Congratulations?

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
Sounds about right. You'll loose about 10k just driving it off the lot. Aftwr 5 years take 20k off what you paid. Hope you didn't buy a vehicle as an investment???

The only way I consider a Toyota an investment is that I shouldn't have to put money into repairs down the road, saving me later on.

    hopefully :)
