I also walked out on my first dealer visit after they stuck to the sticker price and ended up finding a discount at another dealer.

As far as the transmission goes it is programmed to meet the gas mileage. If you don't like the performance then shift manually or use the ECT button.

But would ECT just hold the shift longer or somehow give more power to it so it doesn't need to shift so high?

To some of you, the butthurt is strong lol... is okay, expected that on the 3rd Gen forum. If you like your '16 then what do you care what anyone else thinks?

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
3rd gen is the reality of our model. As our 1st and 2nd gens slowly fade into the history books...
Good thing (for some of us) Toyotas last a really really long time.

OP, I, for one, appreciate you going in there and giving us a first hand account of driving a brand new 4.0 vs the new 3.5. So thanks for that.

What I'm curious about is with the new high tech fuel efficient adkins diet or whatever it is engine, maybe the computer downshifts it because the MPG is actually better if it does. I have heard that lugging an engine, which I used to be guilty of way too often when I drove a stick, is bad for the engine and bad for MPG. Basically you're actually better off at a higher RPM in the next gear down than trying to pour gas into an engine at the bottom of a gear and going uphill or accelerating.

So what would be really useful is taking the exact same test drive at the same speeds with both trucks, and comparing MPG. If the '16 is running 1000 rpm higher but still producing more HP and using less gas, then it is indeed superior. But I doubt you'll be able to perform that test for us without pissing off the dealer :)

Well, technically the new 2016 Tacoma 3.5 uses what's called an Atkinson style engine (I believe it was named after the diet by the same name?). Anyway they've been using it in the Prius and it gets better MPG but has some tradeoffs. One is a narrower RPM range. So it makes sense the engine is revving up into this narrower power band range.

Add to this Toyota has mixed two separate engine technologies in this engine, both direct and port fuel injection. A computer decides which to use and when and the engine switches from one to the other based on engine speed.

So really we've never seen an engine (as far as I know) with all these new technologies combined together. They are a culmination of the Scion FRS and the Prius.

So we'll see how it plays out as reports like this keep trickling in.

2016 Tacoma will have Toyota's D-4S technology, which features direct and port fuel injection. This system is currently used on the Scion FR-S and Subaru BR-Z. It "combines injectors that inject fuel at high pressure directly into the cylinders, together with conventional injectors, injecting fuel into the intake ports," according to Toyota. The two systems turn on and off depending on engine speed.

The system also injects fuel during startup and at certain load points to improve combustion stability without using a restrictive intake port design that increases tumble flow.

A variation of the 2GR-FSE has been used in the Lexus GS350 and a variety of Toyotas. Its not a brand new engine design. Toyota has been using this technology for years

All 2GR engines are Dual VVT-i. They appear in the 2005-present Avalon, 2005-2012 RAV4, 2006-present Sienna, 2006-2011 Camry, 2006-2012 Lexus ES 350, 2007-present Lexus RX 350, 2007-2014 Toyota Highlander, the Corolla Super GT and the Lotus Evora GTE (modified to 4.0L).

The 2GR-FZE was the same engine as the FE, but with a Twin-Vortices supercharger attached for use in limited applications for Lotus, specifically the 2010 Evora and 2012 Exige S. A version of the 2GR with D4-S twin injection, the 2GR-FSE, was also used in 2006 Lexus GS 350, 450h, IS 350, and IS 350 C models. Another variant as an Atkinson-cycle VVT-i, the 02GR-FXE was used in the 2010 Lexus RX 450h and Toyota Highlander Hybrid as well as the 2012 Lexus GS 450hh.

Yikes. Well, actually if the initial price was $37k that comes pretty close.

    Are floor mats a mod?
This after noon, I get an unsolicited call from the dealer I bought my 2011 sport from, saying he had a buyer looking for a timberland mica 2nd gen. I bought mine in dec 2011 with 5500 miles for $25k even. ($31k list) I told him of my mods and that it had 105k miles, he offered me $27k! Also " mentioned "that they have 2016s on the lot if I was interested. Methinks it may have been a sales ploy? Maybe they are not selling as well as the dealers would like to have us think? As I am in the middle of my build, and own my truck outright, and intend to keep it till it is a rusted out heap, I still did the math, and figured the 2016 with mods would end up costing about $50k. Think I'll just keep mine.....

I supplied that info because you said it loses almost that much driving off the lot.

OK, got it. Yes, I was not being exactly accurate in that statement. I'm sure your figures are accurate and of course we know the Tacoma does better then most other vehicles in its class, while still the reality of vehicle depreciation makes an vehicle a poor investment overall , generally. Of course there are exceptions.

This Edmunds graph is a good example of average vehicle depreciation.

The longer you keep your vehicle the flatter the depreciation curve gets and the overall (total) depreciation over time gets lower. I like to try keeping my vehicles for 10 years and find that provides an overall depreciation I am comfortable with.

That chart says an average vehicle loses 11% when driving off the lot. That's 3300 to 4400 dollars for an average vehicle.

Thank you for bringing this up. I'm going to model some data and find a function that my calculus students can differentiate and find that the change in depreciation flattens out over time. Sounds fun

Yea, good idea. And for extra credit have them add in the interest rate of a loan payment. I think a conservative dealer loan would be 3% over 5 years. If you add in the total interest paid at each point that curve will really flatten out at 5 years when the loan is paid off. And the total devaluation will be higher since the initial cost (sale price plus total interest) is higher. That would be a real challenge to set that all up on a Ti-85 (or whatever kids use today).

They don't use graphing calculators. FAPE won't let us expect them to afford or have access to a graphing calculator. If they need to graph something, they will use Desmos on their phone. They don't get to use graphing calculators on our tests and quizzes. We are learning chain rule on Monday so they will be able to differentiate many functions after that. That's when it gets fun. I have been doing application problems with a 2016 Toyota Tacoma as the object. Did one with different accelerations during a 0-60 run. Did a question about the rate of change of quantity pricing of Tsubaki timing chains from Japan.

It's a sales ploy. They also send out cards and letters. Try Google'ing that one day.
There are probably 100 posts on this forum from shmucks getting all hard cock'd because the dealer is so in love with his truck that they offered to buy it for huge money.

It's sad. People should be slightly less ignorant.

If you look at the gear ratios on the 6-speed, they are similar to the ratios on the A750E/F 5-speed with an extra tall 6th gear tacked on. 6th gear is a highway cruising gear meant to help achieve the advertised hwy milage numbers, nothing more. Hell, the truck shouldn't shift into 6th unless it's cruising on the highway.

BTW, average time on lot for the 2016 double cab is just 4 days, so there's no real reason for most dealers to go below sticker: http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2015/10/septembers-fastest-and-slowest-selling-pickups.html#more If you are deal-hunting, wait until the same time next year when they discount 2016s to make room for 2017s...
