LCE Header/Magnaflow too loud! Anyone tried a Walker Quietflow muffler?

    Hey folks, I have the LCE header on my 2.7 with some Magnaflow muffler. At some point I had chopped the exhaust over the rear axle because I was smashing the tip on the trail and it did not clear the leafs well.

    I realize a lot of what makes the combination unlivable is that the exhaust is cut so short that the noise is reflected under the bed. Even then, the whole set up is so damn loud and has some bad resonance (drone) at highway speeds.

    I want to do two things - reroute the exhaust, and try a quieter muffler.

    Has anyone tried the Walker Quietflow muffler?

    cxr turbo, fic6, methanol injection, king coilovers, jba uca, skyjacker leafs, rear 12" 5125s, no-slip rear locker, 35" grabber x3, magnaflow muffler, retrofit headlights, trans cooler, bed lined exterior, etc...
    My exhaust was a little loud/raspy so I added in a 8" glasspack and it toned it down alot without redoing my whole exhaust.

    I ended up installing a Walker SoundFX muffler. It was cheap and is MUCH quieter than before. Still need to have a muffler shop bend up a tailpipe that will clear my spare and the cab noise should be even less.

    I bought it with 2 1/4" openings and it slipped right over my factory tubing which made it super easy to weld on.

    Sounds like you found a solution, but I was going to suggest a dynomax super turbo. I had one and it was slightly louder than stock but not annoying. I now have a flow master delta 50 which is definitely louder. I have the LCE header as well.

    I have a 2002 standard cab 4x4, 2.7, 5 speed. I just put the Stainless walker system on from the cat back. What a huge difference! Quiet! The last muffler was clogged with pieces of the cat and had split. The new assembly came with everything including the tail pipe. I think it was $80 from Rock Auto.

    Is the Walker Quiet Flow just as quiet as stock? I have one ready to install on my Tacoma but haven't got around to installing it yet. I already installed a Walker Quite Flow on my 3rd gen 4Runner and it is nice but probably not quite as quiet as stock.

    I've had one on for years now. It is not "as quiet" as the stock but it's not loud either. no drone and has lasted (I'm starting to get a small hole) for about 5 years

    Got mine installed tonight. It is even quieter than the one on my 3rd gen 4Runner which I am ok with. The only downfall is the only intermediate pipe they offer is made for an extended cab so I had to trim about 18.5" out of the center. I also had to trim the tailpipe so it dumps over the axle otherwise it interferes with the 3" lift leafpack.

    On my old '83 I had LCE headers to a 2.5 Carsound cat, 2.5 piping and a Flowmaster 40 series. Couldn't even hear it.

    The answer is Boggers lol.

    Fwiw, I love my borla setup. Single high flow magnaflow cat, vibrant ultra quiet resonator, and borla pro xs muffler. It is exited out the bedside so I assume that helps with drone. But the resonator plays a bigger part I think. I can't compare it to anything as it's got it's own sound. But it sounds amazing I think. No rasp no drone and just a little tone at low speeds. Can't hear it at idle or at highway speeds. just enough to give it some flare when taking off and cruising at lower speeds. It's awesome. But no idea how it'll sound on a 2.7. But I think if you were to install a resonator it'd help a ton. Kinda wished I hadn't had it installed at the same time because it sounds so awesome, I wish it WAS a little louder now. But yeah I think, if you're looking for a specific tone, pick out the muffler you want that sounds good to you, then get a resonator to quiet it down. That way you have a system you like and will enjoy. Otherwise if you want a quiet system all together then I'd get the quietist muffler and probly even a resonator too. It really does help a lot. And I'm only judging this opinion on all the sound clips I've listened to that I could find because out of all of them I like nothing but the borla and thought it'd be too loud for my liking after a high flow cat. But I really liked the tone so I opted for the resonator and am more than happy with how quiet it came out.

    There quietflow muffler toned things down quite a bit but the drone remains. I understand that this is sort of inherent in the geometry of the piping and not necessarily because of the muffler.

    I've seen pictures around of people running a helmholtz resonator. I like this idea but I was wondering how you determine the right length accurately enough. It seems like it would take some tuning of the length to get the intended effect.

    Has anyone around here tried this?

    There's a formula to figure out the length. I believe you need to first determine the frequency that's annoying you and plug it in to the equation.

    I don't think they're that simple. Temperature comes into play also and that can change with drive duration, intensity, or weather.

    Where to put it? You'd have to measure the temp of the pipe at the location you have space/plan to install it and put the temp in your equation.

    It's an interesting idea, and I'm all for modding and experimenting, just think that the results may vary widely and wouldn't expect results.

    If I tried it, I imagine installing a longer tube and cut and capping it somehow, driving on each length for bit, then determining which was the best and install a final piece.
    I just think there's too many variables to nail down definitive measurements, so maybe redneck engineering could work in this instance.
