    Hey guys,

I'm new to surf fishing and I just scored a sick deal on a Penn Spinfisher and a 9 ft Tsunami Surf Fishing rod

Is this a decent size for casting? I fish off Cape Henlopen Beach in Delaware.

    Thanks y'all.

Not bad....what size spinfisher? My favorite surf rod is a 9ft penn with a 560 slammer....I've got a lot of rods all sizes all the way to 13ft custom made stuff and the 9ft is my favorite.

Good to hear. I wasn't sure if the 9ft is long enough. I picked up the Spinfisher V 6500LL. Its a really sweet reel. I'm going to test it out this weekend.

Depends on your height as well. 9 foot is generally a good size for most people. You got a pretty good reel as well. Good weight balance for the rod. Should be a great set up. Keep it out of the sand and greased, and you will have it for a long time.

Tsunami rods are good. i prefer Tica's about the same price and EasternMarine in Newark carries both.
i have gotten away from spinners, and now prefer casting setup's.
favorite (until my rainshadow is done) is my 11' 4-8oz tica with an Akios 651CTM.

the main thing about the height of the rod is castability and getting over the waves.

Hey Mike! My rod broke a few weeks ago with only 5oz sinker. Long story short, Cabella's old protection plan was a nightmare without the original recipe! I ended up getting the Cabella brand, Salt Striker. So far, its given me better luck at Henlopean.

honestly..... take care of your local tackle shop!!!!!! eastern marine is very competitive with cabelas!! but that should suit you well for now. if you can, step up to graphite or composite, from straight fiberglass. fiberglass is like trying to cast with a telephone pole.

Cabella surf rods are Tsunami, good rod and a few dollars cheaper.

But are cabelas rods specifically the tsunami airwaves? They are a great rod for the money.

I don't know the specifics, I know a Cabelas surf rod is a Tsunami blank. If you ask the rep at Cabelas he should know.

9ft is a bit short imo. Depending on how far you want to cast I wouldnt go less than 11'. 11' with 5oz weight and good casting teqnique will get you a ways. Too much is better than not enough.

unless you are throwing a 12-14'. thats overkill. there is no need to cast for the horizon, in delaware. although i agree the 11'ers get the most use partly because i dont use spinners anymore, and all my casting rigs are 11' or 11'9". last year at the DMS invitational, the largest blue caught was in the wash 30' out. if its a nice calm day, my 9' tica gets the call. realistically the rod depends on whatever weight you need to throw. and as far as asking cabelas rep? no thanks, i had to teach one how to tie an arbor knot because he couldnt get the reel to spool. hahahaaa..... clueless. Did a timing belt, water pump and a few other things, on a friends truck, bought the rod blank and he built it.
