No engine temperature gauge and no clock

    I just bought a 1999 Tacoma and the digital clock and temperature gauge don't work. I'm not sure they are related, but maybe. I checked the fuses and the wire is connected to the temp. probe. What I'm wondering is 1. Is there a relay that energizes these two components 2. Can I ohm out the temp probe, to check it and what reading should a good one read? 3. is there a common issue with the engine temp gauge failure? 4. Where should I start troubleshooting? 5. what should I check?

    Thanks you any help. Does anyone have a wiring diagram so I can trace out the wiring?

    The truck is a 3.4 v6 and a 5 speed 4x4, SR-5.

    First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
    With the temp sensor unplugged check that you have around 5 volts on the reference circuit with the key on and engine off.

    A second test: you can check the resistance of the sensor to ground using an Ohm meter. The resistance of a normal sensor to ground will vary a little depending on the vehicle, but basically, if the temp of the engine is around 200 deg. F., the resistance will be about 200 Ohms. If the temperature is about 0 def. F., the resistance will be over 10,000 Ohms. With this test you should be able to tell if the resistance of the sensor matches the temperature of the engine. If it's not accurate according to your engine's temperature, then you probably have a bad sensor.

    Oh BTW the clock should have nothing to do with the engine temp sensor. They are not on the same circuit.

    ^^^correct clock has nothing to do with temp gague and its fairly common for them to go tits up.

    If your temp gauge is done for its a perfect time to look into a scan gague or ultra gague or something similar. Its an obd reader and a real time gague reader for everything the ecu monitors (some 30 plus values they can monitor and display) water temp included. Much better than the stock gague that isnt all that accurate anyway!

    used to have - 99 2.4L I4 5 lug & 04 prerunner v6
    if you want a working clock I can sell you the one out of my 04, it still works perfectly fine, I just removed it when I did my dash light mod because my radio has a clock on it so it wasn't needed and no longer matched the new blue dash lights

    I think the temp gauge is a common issue here but I have never seen anyone give a helpful answer except "get a scangage."

    I did get a scangage and like it, but have always wished I could make the stock gauge work again - I'm, just not excited about removing the instrument cluster!
