I have a '13 Outback that goes away as soon as my truck shows up. Damn thing goes through oil like crazy. 1 qt per 2.5-3k from the day I drove it off the lot. According to Subaru anything over 1 qt per 1.2k is within spec...

Maybe they did but I'll never know because 2014 was the last year of the 6MT.

My 06 Outback had that problem, turned out the alignment was out and the tires were cupped (from the dealer, not quite sure how it past their "stringent" provincial safety a couple months before). With new tires and a fresh alignment (had to replace tie rod ends and every bushing in the suspension to do it) the car drove like a dream. I would definitely get an alignment check for a ghost-walking Subaru... Man that's a scary experience!

My 06 went thru about that much too, then the engine exploded and the "new" engine goes thru 1 qt per 1000k.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? THE MT OPTION WAS THE ONLY REASON I LIKED SUBARU! I guess I'll need to get an Audi if I ever want an AWD car with a manual transmission.

designers are followers. similar in architecture. once a style becomes "accepted" it's where they all go until a new trend evolves. look at commercial building and even homes from decade to decade.

That's not so bad I guess... I just noticed the rav4 isn't available as a manual anymore either.

A builder bought all the land (or the contract to build the houses) up the hill my house lives on when we first moved in and just about every house look exactly the same. It's awful...but people bought the crud out of them over the years.

Usually the ob is a family vehicle and MT were/are pretty rare in them. Only seen 1 in person w/a manual.

@2ayne As far as the xv not having enough space...it's basically a premium packed impreza lifted 8.7" off the ground aka it's a high riding car. So yeah, it won't have suv room.

I've heard the Mt in the xv is a bit clunky. But usually a special order as well. The paddle shifters are pretty fun in the cvt though :spy:

I hear ya man. We got one of the last MTs in our 14 Outback. I wanted the MT simply because of the AWD system that they have (old but reliable mechanical center diff with viscous coupler) and the 50/50 torque split all the time. I have tried many times to get tire spin in snow. It refuses.

The MT in the Outback is a bit on the sub-optimal side. First is way too long and fifth and sixth (both OD gears) are right on top of each other. Shifter fell is okay I guess, but it's no Honda.

Turn the traction control all the way off, donuts for days in the snow.

Mine was an 06, so 5MT with Limited Slip rear diff and no traction control. I couldn't get one tire to spin, but I had all four spinning in over 12" of fresh snow once or twice :p (no, I didnt get stuck). I don't know why they had no trac or vsc for the manuals, but apart from the occional ghost-walking it wasn't so bad.

I read up on the ghost walk for xv's and seems like a mixture of bad rear alignment, having no weight over the back wheels (lite crossover problems), and drivers refusing to slowdown in less than perfect conditions thinking awd/4wd makes them invincible.

Alignments at tire shops (not the dealer) and a few sand bags on the back usually fixed the problem, if I read it correctly.

Bad rear alignment I can believe. I didn't rotate the tires for 25k miles and the right rear one is wearing way faster than the rest.
I'm not sold on that weight thing though. It seems to walk more with 2 other heavy dudes in the car.
As far as refusuing to slow down... I was getting my ass waxed by 18 wheelers one after another. I was scared I was going to get rear ended.

Two dudes sitting in he front seats is not putting weight over the rear wheels.

It could also the the Awd system being too twitchy and trying to adjust to every slip or the rear tires. But again I believe that comes back to not enough weight over the tires causing them to not contact the pavement secure enough allowing them to slip.

Then the awd system tries to fix it but by the time the wheels respond there is already a new correction by the awd system causing screwy handling because the tires keep slipping because there isn't enough weight to keep them secured to the icy pavement.

That's my take on it. But I live in cali. What is rainfall? What is snow? :p

Two 200 pounders in the front with One 250 pounder in the back should be more than enough weight compared to one 200 pounder in the front.
It ghost walked the worst that day. Idk.
    Not my problem anymore. Lol
