As posted elsewhere, my BSM started failing on day 2. Happens about half the time when starting the truck. It also failed twice while driving as I was passed on the right. When it fails I simply turn it off for the remainder of the drive.

I'll have it looked at as time permits as it has only been a minor inconvenience.

My 4x4 Sport with tech package started having BSM error right about 3 minutes into the drive home. Since it was a Sunday, I couldn't take it back into the dealership service. It was on and off for a while (obviously whenever I would be ready to take it to dealership, it wouldn't be on). Following are the symptoms I have noticed
    1) The error might turn on as soon as you start the car or it might come on after you have driven it for a bit
    2) When BSM switch is pressed, I think it does a power on test where by it beeps and the indicator comes on on both the mirrors. In my case, most of the time, the light only comes on in the passenger mirror and then the error message pops up. Looks like the problem might be in the driver side circuit.
    3) some have the issue only during night.. My case, I had the issue during daytime as well. Mechanic said they think it is due to some overloading of circuits?? Doesn't make any sense to me..

I took it into the dealership today and they confirmed that they could reproduce it and also confirmed that the Toyota is acknowledging the issue and currently they do not have a solution defined. The dealership has opened a case/file and said they would contact me once they have the fix in place.

He said it could be anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months!!!

That sucks! Mine saved my bacon on it's first morning in action - almost backed into a car tearing down my street this AM. Looked both ways and was backing up and it started beeping - didn't know what the beep was so stopped and a car flew by. I hope they don't systemically all fail and that we get a fix soon. Keep us posted!

The rear parking sensor will still work. What will not work is the blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert.. Kinda bums me out since BSM was a big reason I spent the 2k+ on tech package

Mine has same problem! Will be taking it back for the third time. First they reset the system then on next trip in they changed the side view mirror. Nothing has fixed the problem yet. I will be taking it back next Tuesday and will update.

Don't waste your time taking it back. They need to open a tech line directly to Toyota to get you on the list to receive the ECU update. It's a programming issue involving the sensor's relay to the mirrors to the headlights.

The best blind spot monitor is your eyes and the mirrors.

No but seriously does anyone know in fact where the sensors are mounted for the BSM and Backup sensor? Are there any schematics/parts layout out on these sensors yet?

I wouldn't waste my time like that, wait for an update to the ECU, I doubt there's
anything they can do except keep trying random fixes that most like will do nothing
but waste more of your time and frustrate you further.

Is the BSM something you can turn off?

I only turn off mine when the error pops up. It works about 50% of the time. It follows murphy's law perfectly as in it doesn't work when it is needed :)

My temporary workaround is to turn off the BSM when parking, and then turn it on AFTER starting the truck. It has not failed yet since I started doing this three days ago.

UPDATE: It failed while driving yesterday as I was passed on the right.

Mine quit working on the way home from the dealership but I haven't took it back in. I'm going to wait until I take it in for the first oil change and ask them about it then.

Sorry to hear about your probs.... mine works perfect, even picks up motorcyclists splitting lanes and even bicyclists. BSM is prob my fav feature on the truck, no more cranking my neck.

Man we've gotten so lazy with technology. I wouldn't trust the BSM over checking my mirrors anyhow. It's not worth the off chance of sending a biker into an early grave and potential for vehicular manslaughter charges due to negligence...

The BSM should be a secondary layer of checks & balances but not a primary capability to use for changing lanes IMO

I don't use the BSM only, it's an additional layer of safety. I do check my mirrors 100% of the time, the only difference now, is that I also specifically look for the yellow warning sign (indicating if something is there). Understand, I am also a motorcyclists who often lane splits, so I am particularly sensitive to this danger.
