What does the s shift in my Tacoma do? When I put it from "d" to the "s" + or - it just displays s4 in the information screen but I can't get it to up shift or down shift. What am I doing wrong or what is it suppose to do?

When in manual mode, it shifts when you tap the shifter up or down. You cant shift manually into 5th or 6th.

I can't even down shift mine. If I stop at a light I've tried to downshift from 4th to 1st and it doesn't do anything

See post 6. This is exactly how it works. It acts like an OD lockout - i.e. when you first shift to S - it put the transmission in 4 - it will act like an automatic and go up and down from 1 to 4 and back to 1 as needed OR you can shift it. The number "4" displayed in the center of the display is the "high limit" if you will. i.e. it will not go above 4. Now, if you push the stick and have "5" in your center display, 5 is the limit. I've driven a bunch of Camry's as rentals recently and they work the same - once you get the hang of it you will probably love it. If it doing nothing it is time for a trip to the dealer.

Its best use is probably to control the level of engine braking. I have it in my 4Runner and use it in lieu of brakes on the highway daily. I haven't found it to be very useful when accelerating.

Good explanation, mine works the same way. Now that I understand it, I really like it. For around town, I'm just leaving it at "4".

Is engine braking a legitimate use of the manual shifter. Not asking for premature wear if it wasn't designed for it?

Ok so I understand it's like a lock out but I have tried to lower it down to one but it doesn't indicate anything lower than 4 and it won't go to five. Hmm calling the dealership. Maybe it's me but I'm pretty sure it's not doing anything.

Yeah, sounds like you have an issue for them to address. Took delivery of mine last night and it works exactly like I described and that other post describes.

I took it to the dealership and nobody knew what was wrong. So the director and a guy with many years of experience looked at it and saw that it was operating properly. I have an appointment Monday evening to drop it off. I suppose we will see what the outcome is. Thanks guys for awhile there I thought I was crazy.
