My theory. The MPG of the new V6 is close to the 4 cylinder so why have a 4 cylinder? I think Toyota may be planing on a V8 to fill the wasted space created in the 3rd gen front end. Plausable? Or God forbid, a hybrid.

    It's a pedestrian crumple zone.

It has nothing to do with engines.

How fast does the pedestrian have to be running to crumple that thing? I see no other cars with two feet of extra hood.

And why are the MPG specs nearly the same on the 4 banger? Answer is Toyota does not care about the specs of the 4 banger. It's the lowest cost of admission to get you into a Tacoma. If you are a business owner and need a basic work truck, you want the 2.7 liter because of initial cost and reliability. That motor was never built for steller MPG.

Or maybe a picnic basket, since anyone that buys a 2016 is clearly a public park loving, family dinner eating, careful planning, son of a cracker

I actually like the 4 cylinder. It would be sad to see it go. No gasoline powered 4 cylinder is going to have stellar MPG pushing 4000 lbs. I think the engine is actually fairly efficient.

Fast enough. It's a federal mandate not yet in effect, since most pedestrian strikes are under a certain MPH, the extra space up front is to help absorb the blow of these low speed collisions and only permanently maim a pedestrian and contribute to a life of pain and colostomy bags instead of killing them with reasonable dignity.

Toyota redesigned prior to this requirement to be "in effect," and so they included it early as not to waste money.
When the rest of the manufacturers are forced to do it, or willingly include the feature into early redeisgns, you'll see more empty hood room. Unfortunately it isn't so you can eventually get a V8 Honda Accord.

Rumor has it, though, that rocket ship.

V8? that would be an awesome option that the GM twins can't match (yet!)
But I thin the 4 cyl is probably the same length as the 4.6L V8? but yes the nose space is massive!

Should have put the 4.6 liter in it in the first place
