Anyone have a real short "crunch" or grind when they first kick on their AC? Only happens on a cold start, typically after the first time I start the truck for the day. AC still blows super cold. Dealership says it's normal, but we all know how iffy those guys are. I bought the truck used 6 months ago so I don't know if it's always done it since new.

My tacoma doesn't do it, but I had a civic that did exactly that. Sounded like sandpaper on the compressor clutch being crushed the first time I turned the AC on each day. After that it could go on and off without an issue. Never did cause a problem, compressor lasted for years doing it and never crapped out. Dunno what causes it

Mine does this but only when its hot I have to wait to hear the Vacuum from the engine before I turn on the AC otherwise it will make a grinding noise. Curious whats grinding, maybe someone can chime in, was going to have the dealer look at it but forgot until I read this thread.

Any resolving of the issue? I get this only after my truck has sat for a few days then go to use the AC, it has a quick grinding noise, then stops and works just great.

You can remove the compressor clutch and dress up the mating surfaces. I did this using 60 grit sandpaper just lightly touching up the surfaces. Completely quiet now. Remove the drive belt then use a compressed air tool or else a strap to hold the clutch when removing the 8mm bolt. Snap ring pliers are needed to remove the pulley/bearing unit and coil unit.
I just ordered a new clutch assembly for later as it seems to take a beating with all the on/off cycles this compressor does.
BTW, the bearing is staked on the pulley.

New clutch on, no noise during engagement.
