Some advice after installing dozens of stereos and systems.
    Method 1:
    Buy this:
    Male
    Metra 71-1761 87 - 94 Toyota Vehicle Harness https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00029X1KA/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_DsuhwbMM5Y9G2

    Female
    Metra 70-1761 - TOYOTA 87-UP PWR 4 SPKR (70-1761) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LPUG3UU/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_huuhwbJZB5DE0

    line out
Kicker KISLOC 2-Channel K-Series Speaker Cable to RCA Adapter with Line Out Converter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I4EF1BC/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_PxuhwbA35HSQK

Connect those three/four harnesses together BEFORE you begin your install. I solder the joints and use shrink tube, never failed. With this method, you won't touch your original bare wire. ~$40 is totally worth it. $60 if you plan to tap all 4. And this will just plug and play to your stereo.

Double check if Toyota has not changed their connectors.

You can shop around and get a different in line converter. That's just a suggestion.

    Method 2:
SOLOOP 10PCS Blue Quick Splice Wire Terminals&Male Spade Connectors Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013BC8MZ8/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_KBuhwbJG6FD9B

Rockford Fosgate Speaker Line To Female RCA Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G352P2C/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_CQuhwbQE7F14F

    This one is ~$20.
Those spades work but it does compromise the original wiring. I use that method for simple quick installs.

Hopefully someone uses this info. It's totally worth spending the cash on exactly what you need and fits. Otherwise you can be stuck leaning lopsided taking off your head unit twice.

    I think I know what I'm doing ;).

My peeve with stock head units is their low power output and signal processing/equalization. The Clean Sweep basically turns a stock head unit sound (crap) into an aftermarket sound (think, the absolute, night and day sound difference between a stock and aftermarket head unit). The wiring to keep the stock head unit is out there, but if one wants to upgrade their sound experience then an aftermarket head unit or some variation of the Clean Sweep is in order, I think.

    I agree and disagree.

If you're spending the capital for a high end unit/mini-amp, at that point you would want a better set of speakers.

    This means a complete overhaul.

This is one thing that I don't like about new cars. They integrated EVERYTHING into their stereo display. Sometimes there's features on the oem head unit that you can't get in aftermarket units.

Edit: A small sub alone in a car makes a whole night and day experience. Low bass expands the audio waveform spectrum. It adds a higher contrast to the middle and highs.

Thanks for all the advice provided in this thread. I'll be looking into both solutions to get our sub up and running. Some great information here.

Absolutely. The JBL system should have the upgraded JBL surround/door speakers along with the head unit and sub. I took it for granted in my post that it goes without saying that one should upgrade everything (head unit, surround, amps, sub, etc.) if they are doing some sort of aftermarket install and want a quality listening experience.
I prefer to keep the oem head unit when it has all of the integration. The JBL upgrade is fine for many and fairly comprehensive, in that the head unit, doors, amp, and sub have all gotten an upgrade. If no JBL upgrade, everything needs to be upgraded (but use an oem interface to keep the stock head unit and still reep the sound rewards of an aftermarket unit).

So how about when the head unit is the base SR5 head unit. Is it still possible to upgrade the door speakers and add a sub and amp to a double cab with the stock head unit?

none of those harnesses connect to the back of the 2016 non JBL entune HU though I bought them and tried no luck.

    Hmmm sorry they don't fit.

It has been years (almost 30, since 87) since Toyota had not switched those harness molds. (Maybe because its a premium head unit...:notsure:)

Until we have new connectors I guess we won't be able to do method 1 :(

incorrect. There is not premium tech package on the SR5 trucks. Only TRD trucks can have the premium tech package as an option.

Really sorry, have no idea how they hooked up it. I took all my equipment to Al&Eds autosound and they wired everything up for $100. Didn't want to chance messing anything up.
