I need to read the owners manual apparently because I've put it in that shifting mode "select shift" or whatever it is called and I don't see it doing anything or holding gear or feel it actually shift. I also don't see where it indicates the gear I'm in

I am in the same boat as you....have had 6 or 7 jeep wranglers (all reliable except for one and that was mostly due to a bad mechanic messing it up), an f150, 2 of the GM full size pickups and one 4runner in the past (owned it for a short time and had one expensive repair). ordered a 16 OR TRD and can't wait for it...should give me best of both worlds (pickup and jeep) along with simplicity and hopefully reliability.

There was another member on here that said his sport shift was not working either, just staying at 4. He took it to dealer and they acknowledged the problem. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-sport-shift-what-does-it-do.395510/

Congrats and welcome to the community. I'm on my 3rd Tacoma. My first one was totaled, my second one had a repaired frame from a previous owner after I found out I got my new 2013. My point being is I could of shopped other trucks, both times I went back to the Tacoma because of its reliability and durability. I beat the crap out of my 2005 (jumped it several times, almost submerged it and hung on the frame so many times. I was young since I bought it new in Dec 2004). My first truck was a 2001 GMC Sonoma Highrider loved the truck but it was so unreliable and always left me stranded so I went to Toyota and has never done me wrong so I guess I'm a fanboy :)

Did you get this figured out? See page 197 of the owners manual.

If you think TW is brutal, then don't even go to toyota-4runner forum.
Compared to 4R forum, TW is heaven!
