I bought a 2015 about a month ago and have 1500 miles on it... Obviously pretty new. Anyways, since I want to drive this for 20+ years (it is replacing a '93 ranger with 340k miles) of salty Cincinnati winters I figured now would be a good time to start preserving it. I split a fluid film kit with my buddy and in preparation for spraying this weekend I decided to poke around underneath and decide if I should wash it first or not. To my great surprise I found quite a bit of rust down there. Much more than my '07 Mazda... And this is a new truck! WTF!

    Rear axle:

End link bolts and other front knuckle hardware:

Is this normal? Should I take it to the dealer? Should I repaint problem spots now? Am I being too picky? It's a truck - move on?!?!?!

Those spots you show are normal to rust quickly on these trucks. Go ahead and put your film over it. It will slow the process.

I also live in an area that uses lots of salt. Definitely wash the underside when you can during the snowy times. I know it's hard to in really cold climates, but doing some washing is better than no washing.

    enough to go over stuff
Just a little bit of surface rust. Keep an eye on it every year. Apply rust preventative measures seasonally and wait for a frame rust tsb in 10 years.

Id hit the frame spots in the wheel well with some rubberized frame paint for a little extra coverage.

In the north and northeast where they love road salt, it's inevitable. When you buy a new vehicle here it already has rust starting somewhere.

I have a 2015 and live in CA now, but we're moving to the mid-west in a couple weeks.

If I put fluid film on now, would it prevent it from rusting or just slow it down?
