I was lucky enough to pick up a 2016 Magnetic Grey DCLB TRD Sport last week an hour after it arrived at the dealership. I wanted to share a few of my observations so far and hopefully answer some lingering questions folks might have.

I ordered a CoverCraft windshield shade ($50 on Amazon) made for the 2nd gen tacoma and it doesn't fit. Im assuming the windshield is either shorter, or the rear view mirror is lower. The mirror doesn't allow the the sun shade to fit. The cheaper "foil" looking ones from any auto parts store will fit, but I'v noticed over the years that those leave a film on the inside of the windshield.

Also, I towed my 5'x8' 3k pound trailer the other day full of old lumber to the dump and it towed great. Plenty of power to get up and go. I probably had 1000lbs of material in the trailer and it barley sagged the rear end...a big difference from my previous 2009 Tacoma DCSB that would sag with my dog in the back.

I was able to get the dealership to throw in a rubber bed mat as well. The label on the packaging said it was for up to 2015 models, however it fits perfectly in the 2016.

I'm curious how sought after are the stock wheels and tires are for these trucks. Id like to get a set of wheels and slightly larger tires (Cooper Discoverer ATP 265 70r 17) in the near future but I'm have a hard time justifying it because the stock ones are obviously brand new.

What do you think has/had more power...the 2nd gen or 3rd gen? (seat of the pants feel)

Most 5x8 trailers are not going to be near 3,000 lbs. Or is that the capacity? If so, you probably only had 1,500 lbs or so behind your truck. The 4 banger should be able to handle that with relative ease.

More or less power you ask...well "power" can be very subjective. The initial acceleration from a stop is slower than the 2nd gen, however when i was towing, I count even tell the trailer was back there granted it was only 1500-2000 lbs. The location of "power" is definitely different than the 2nd gens. I didn't buy this truck so I could burn out at a stop light or race other vehicles on the road. Its a medium duty truck...hauls lumber just fine, pulls a small trailer and fits the wife and kids in the back. Plenty of power for that.

Sorry, I didn't take any pictures when I was towing. And yes, the trailer is rated at 3000 lbs.

Might want to take it easy starting out, one of the 2016 break-in recommendations is not to do any towing for the first 500 miles.

Sunroof shrinks the cab by 6 inches... Only suitable for a midget. You didn't buy one with the Sunroof did you? It may cause you permanent neck cramps if you're over 5'2"

Towing a 1500lb trailer probably only taxes the engine/trans as much as driving around with 4 plus size americans in the cab, as long as he isn't raging up and down mountain passes.

I am itching to see a 2016 tow 4,000+ lbs up a mountain pass.

Yes i do have a sun roof. Im 6' and have no issues with the roof line....except the sun shade not fitting. Its funny to see people making uneducated claims based on 3rd gen bashing rumors.

Ike Gauntlet test by the TFT if they can get their hands on a 2016. Hopefully they do it right with a 6000lb trailer on the back.

They will get one eventually. Availability is becoming less of a concern with the 2016's. Most dealers have them in stock now.
