oil overfilled from factory?

    Hi everyone, new to the forum. I just picked up a brand new 2015 Tacoma ACLB off-road with 25 kms last week. Actually my first truck and trying to absorb as much info as I can from these forums. I checked my oil this past weekend while filling up at the local Shell. I was surprised to note that the oil level read approx. 1/4" over the 2nd dot on the dipstick. With the truck being new and all, I'm assuming the factory overfilled the oil? If it was the dealer then I could understand as most are fairly incompetent. But all they would do is the PDI which doesn't normally entail an oil change. I tried waiting a bit for the oil to drain back and also rechecking in the morning but same results. The manual states that anything over the 2nd dot is "excessive" lol. Is this a problem or should I not worry about it? I left a msg for the service dept at the dealer but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

    I wouldn't worry. There is some margin of error on the fill, and it has to be able to cope with sloshing in the crankcase, so I literally would not think twice about it.

    The dipsticks on these trucks SUCK ASS!! It's not uncommon to see the oil on the stick above the line (and just about everywhere else on the stick) especially after an oil change or driving it. I've never had a vehicle that I couldn't effectively check the dipstick almost immediately after an oil change.

    You might want to check it again in the morning after the truck has been sitting for hours.

    The oil also expands and contracts with heat. The guys are right dont worry....

    Good to know I'm not the only one who can't read the dipstick on this engine! I re-check the level 3-4 times over a week after an oil change just to make sure it never goes low. It always reads high, though, no matter how much oil I think I've filled. I usually drain and pour in 5qts. Book says it takes 5.5, so I'm assuming there's .5qts floating around in there somewhere.

    I always wait till after the truck sits overnight to check the oil as everyone above cause the dipsticks are hard to read.

    OP- This is silly, next thing you are going to try to get us to believe that your brand new truck is rattling like a 10 year old vehicle.

    Snugtop cab high canopy.
    When I put the specified amount of oil in my engine it's above the 2nd mark on the dipstick. The oil was there when I got it from the dealer. The dipstick is incorrect. There are other posts about this. It's normal.

    Yep... 5.5qts puts it over the line...i've always just used 5qts and never had an issue. To get a good stick reading scuff up between the dots with sandpaper into a "x" pattern. After you remove the dip stick wipe it off and wait 10-15 minutes before reinserting (let the oil drain back down the tube that the stick brought up.) The capaciites called out are approximate... you add as necessary to bring to appropriate levels (same with the gear oil levels.) Imho it's better to be a hair low than be over.

    Appreciate all the responses! Try not to give the noob a hard time ;). I'm not new to cars but I am new to Tacoma's and trucks in general so there's some catching up to do. I had several options but ended up choosing the Tacoma over a full size GMC/Chevy 1500, Tundra and even the Canyon/Colorado. Yeah I was looking at the full spectrum but in the end decided to go with a mid size and the Tacoma fits that bill perfectly. The only thing I maybe regret is that I could have picked up a loaded GMC Sierra SLE 5.3L with the factory incentives and it wasn't significantly more than the Tacoma. A lot of truck for the money but I tried and the Sierra would not fit in the garage and the wife didn't approve so that pretty much sealed the deal.

    Anyways back to the oil drama, the dealer told me to swing by after work. They extracted over a half litre of oil to get it to the 2nd dot, they used some weird looking pump and container with an air hose then stuffed a tube down. What you guys were saying was correct, I mentioned it to the service manager and he told me not to worry about it. It happens all the time, dipsticks can vary and not always perfectly accurate. They decided to pull out some oil just in case and probably because they wanted me to give them a good review for that Toyota survey. :thumbsup:

    On my 2015 PreRunner 4.0L - 5.5 qts. and a new dealer filter
    $55 90915-YZZD3 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)
    90915-YZZD3 put the oil level right on the full mark.

    Every other Toyota I've ever owned had the oil level above the full mark using the qty. specified in the owners manual and using a dealer filter.

    I would not worry about 1/4".
