I have a 5 speed 4 cyl Tacoma. 60k miles. When I am casually accelerating from a stop, I am letting the clutch out as I press the gas. As the clutch is let out, and the truck is at low rpms (idle speed or maybe alittle higher) I get a squeaky sound from under the hood. As the rpms get to normal levels the sound is gone. Also, when I go over slight bumps in the road I get the same squeaky sound. Even makes the sound if I coast (rolling in neutral - engine speed at idle) over slight bumps in the road. To my ears it sounds like something with the belt, but I checked my belt and it appeared fine. Also this squeaky sound does not happen when the motor is cold.

Any ideas? I hate to take it to the dealer to diagnose. Figured someone here might have an idea.

Check your u-joints on the driveshaft. Also check the carrier bearing.

Driveshaft? really? Is this a common thing?

It sounds as if it is coming from under the hood. For example, if I am pointing the truck up a slight incline and let the clutch out nice and slow and kind of balance the truck. Meaning not letting it roll backwards, but not letting it move forward. Just use the clutch and gas to keep from rolling backwards downhill I hear the noise.

My hood bumpers squeak like a bitch. I have to lube mine with silicone.

Heres how to test it. Park truck with it off. Rock the truck violently and see if the truck makes noise. If it does, open the hood and shake the truck again. If the squeak stops, it's the hood bumpers.

When a u-joints is bad it is a common thing. I would crawl under the truck and check just to rule that out. Not saying it is that but it's a possibility. Also check what moondeath said.

Once I crawl under, what about the u-joints will mean that they are bad? What symptoms am I looking for?

They shouldn't have any movement in them.

    Side to side
    Up and down
    Back and forth

The chirpy noise was actually coming from a spot on the passenger side where the radiator is attached to the body (just behind the grille). It was ever so slightly loose. Simply tightened it up with a 12mm socket and it has been silent ever since.

Replacing the belt solved the chirp noise on my 2008 2.7, but you may not have the same noise.
