What kind of tomato is that dark cherry? Is that a Black Vernissage? Almost looks like it, but darker...

Had a rainy Saturday AM, so I gathered all of my ripe tomatoes up and had a sauce day. Did about 35lbs' worth of pasta sauce, and ended up with 4 quarts and 20 pints of sauce (and a bunch of leftover skin/seeds!). I'll do another batch in a couple of weeks and that should get us through the next year without any trouble.

And the GF and I are going apple picking this weekend, so I should have applesauce and apple rings for the winter by this time next week :woot:

Lol. I've only got another couple weeks' of reliable growing season before I need to start putting the garden to bed for the winter, haha!

My tomatoes are still green. Cuke leaves look frail but I think they got a second wind. Have 4 more just popped out. I'm going to pull a couple of tomatoes this weekend. Let them ripen on the window.i don't want to lose the big ones to cridders.

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg End of season. The middle bin of the compost is pure black gold from the past few months of table and yard scraps. The right hand one is the first of the leaves that soon will be the same.

The peppers and some tomatoes are still fine in the green house. Good flavour!

It was a good year and the freezer is full!

This is the time of year our garden puts out good stuff everyday. Now its a race to get as much production out of it prior to a freeze not that I can influence that beyond crossing my fingers :D

The deck is some "Treck" which is plastic wood. I had this left over from a job and it turned out to be a good choice as it has not rotted despite being always wet.

The base is 12 feet long and each of the bins is about three feet deep. There is space between all of the slates for good air curculation. The one by four is almost done after almost eight years. I didn't use treated material for this, but I might when I renew it this spring. The whole thing is elevated for air.

If I remember to turn it and keep it wet it works incredibly fast in the warmer weather. This summer I was away and ignored it, and it still worked well!

If I had more room I would have another. There is no better top dressing than well rotted compost.

Supposed to be in the 20's overnight here for the next couple of nights, which should just about kill off what's left in the garden. The beds against the house are hooped so that the peppers can get some extra grow time to finish up, but pretty much everything else is on its last legs. Looking at my preserving/canning book and it turned out to be not a bad season, for all that it got off to a late start. Far from my best, but not bad.
    This year we got:
23 meat birds (averaging 5-8lbs) in the freezer
    8.5 gallons of strawberries (frozen)
10 quarts of green beans (frozen)
20 quarts of snap peas (frozen)
10 pints of dilly beans (canned)
16 quarts of dill pickles (canned)
12 pints of garlic dills (canned)
19 garlic bulbs - lousy crop because of rodents
3.5 gallons of tomato/pasta sauce (canned)
19 pints of beets (canned) so far
    6 pints of ketchup (canned)
6 quarts of ham stock (canned)
6 quarts of chicken stock (canned) so far

    Additionally, I bought and preserved
    6 gallons of corn (frozen)
1 bushel of apples which became 22 pints applesauce (canned) and 19 half pints of apple butter (canned)

I haven't dug the carrots yet, but I'm estimating I'll have around 6-8 gallons of frozen carrots when I do, and I've still got a half bed each of beets and parsnips. The beets and carrots I'll pull and preserve after their tops get frost-killed, because that drives the sugar into the roots. And the parsnips I'll leave in all winter and dig in the spring because that improves their flavor.

Nah, not really. I plant a second crop of peas in September, and some cool weather tolerant greens like kale and some lettuce varities, but they're pretty much done by November.

Interesting, I've never had green catsup.
I love fried green tomatoes though, we're having some on Friday :hungry:
