If I had to have a diesel, I think I could wait for the Colorado diesel.

Change the fuel type on the registration at the DMV and pass the visual inspection that proves you don't have it tied up with baling wire and duct tape.

Take it to inspection station and pass the test. Someone stated that these engines don't meet current standards but if you read the pass/fail list you will find that Toyota never submitted it for testing so it has never "failed to meet minimum emissions standards."

I'm trying to crank some loot into other stuff right now - paying off my house and medical bills - but I plan to go through with it. Ten grand for a half cut with engine, wiring harness, and associated ECU's plus about ten grand for labor to keep all existing systems operating and have it fit and function like it came stock seems more than fair to me.

If I could, I'd go the extra mile to find an Australian spec 79 series so I could get a 1VD-FTV installed instead.

These swaps aren't for everybody and being honest, I agree that it isn't necessary. But then again, a FlipPac and remote resivior coil-overs with clickers weren't necessary either but I'm tickled to have them.
