I said about the worse case !!

The thing one needs to worry about is the vibration when things start to go bad with the way my luck goes it is always the worse case in the worse place .

Most liked the Cross Bronx Expressway at rush hour on Friday night

Your right much better to say don`t worry about it it will just make some noise.

I had a carrier bearing go bad on a BMW sedan, the rubber tore completely loose, but of course the cage was still there. I didn't know what was wrong at first, but whenever I goosed it (340 hp v8) in 1st or 2nd gear the driveshaft would flop around hard enough against the bottom of my car that it bounced my cell phone out of the cup holder between the seats.

Needless to say I stopped doing that while I diagnosed the issue. There was no catastrophic failure and as long as I didn't stress the driveline I didn't even notice for the month it took me to get around to swapping the shaft (rebuilt was almost the same price as the bearing). That design did not have the double cardan joint as your truck may have (mine does) but still, seems like a low risk to me.

I'm back from Hilton Head. We had a great weekend. I rented a Kia Soul. Great gas mileage. Terrible road noise.

I've got the center bearing back in, now. But, I've got a vibration between 20 mph and 40 mph. I think I'm taking it to a driveline shop in the morning.

    Thanks for the help, everyone.

The drive line shop can't get to it today, so I'll go back tomorrow morning and get them to fix it. Most likely just balancing it.

After talking to the guy that runs the shop I think I screwed up by not noting the orientation of the rear flange when I took it off. I marked where all the flanges bolt together, but I neglected to mark the flange on the shaft.

    Live, learn, and pay.

Soooooo, it's not an issue .....;)

OP, All these 'yotas with dbl cardan/split/2-piece shafts have an excessive amount of play it seems & actually is deemed "normal" since Toyota themselves have no set standard of specs for the carrier, that said yours is about toast not because of excessive play but because it looks like the grommet is separating from the carrier housing which translates into a rip or tear in the rubber, like mentioned it can last 10000 miles or 10 miles... Does it squeal ?? Or vibes yet ?

Did you remember to mark the flanges/bolts before you split the shafts at the dbl cardan ? (so it re-orients itself the way it came apart)

I did that. But, the flange has to come off the back of the front shaft to get the center bearing out. *That* I didn't mark, and undoubtedly have in a different orientation.
