Any College Journalism Majors here?

I am finally ready to buckle down and finish college after many years of switching degrees or just aimlessly taking general studies courses. I think i have decided on Journalism as a major, with a minor in marketing or digital media.

My question for those with a communications/journalism/marketing major is what advice would you have for someone thinking about going this route?

What are employers looking for in this type of field?
I have been contacted by an editor to an overland/offroad oriented magazine to talk about using some of my photos for the publication previously, and would love to add my own writings along with my photos for various publications related to offroad, exploration, history, tourism, recreation and travel.
